Un vieux DELL Latitude 5270 poussif sous un windows vieux de quelques années vient de retrouver sa liberté (et une seconde jeunesse) !
– ouvrir le capot
– remplacer le disque dur par un SSD
– refermer
– démarrer sur une clé USB bootable
– installer #LinuxMint 22.1
– redémarrer et installer toutes les mises à jour nécessaires.
Temps total de l'opération : 25 minutes
Absolument TOUT fonctionne du 1er coup.

Be. Kind. To. Them.
They don't know much yet, so they are going to ask really basic questions. If you're KIND, you might get some to give it a try and stick to it bc they know they can ask for help. If you're unkind, you're showing them using Linux will be worse than Windows. If you can't bring yourself to be kind, then SAY NOTHING. Let others pick up that slack.
This toot is to announce that I have officially divorced Microsoft. I was sick of how they always shared things about me without my permission, and made changes to our relationship without asking first. Then they brought a third party into our relationship and insisted that I rely on the new "person" for advice and help in everything. I tried to tell that "AI" "person" to go away, but they just kept appearing out of nowhere.
Anyway, I kicked them both out, and now I'm living with Linux, who is sweet and always asks for consent before we make any changes to how we live. Linux can do everything that Microsoft can do, and usually does it better. Linux can be a bit quirky, but is open to working things out and having productive conversations. I haven't felt this free in over 20 years.

I've just been asked to upgrade 2 old PCs (Windows 7) to Linux. Which distro would you recommend for beginners? I'm currently hesitating between Mint, Zorin OS and Fedora...Or maybe Ubuntu?

Building Medley Interlisp from source has been dramatically faster since the past week or so: it now takes 1/3 of what it used to. I didn't modify the setup of my Linux Mint 22.1 Cinnamon box other than the usual system updates, and there were no recent major performance related changes to Medley.
I'm really happy but wonder about the source of the speedup. Perhaps some Linux kernel tweaks but my Mint release doesn't incorporate the bleeding edge.
I also wonder if hitting the Windows¹ key, then typing "tou" and hitting Enter to open the Mouse and Keyboard dialog. The touchpad can be disabled and re-enabled using the keyboard. That might be enough to get the computer to see the touchpad again.
[1] As I still think of it, even if #LinuxMint prefers Super, and other distros say Meta (which I like better as a name).
