Please tell me I'm not becoming a grouchy old man https://robertreich.substack.com/p/please-tell-me-im-not-becoming-a?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon
a lot of "AI deleted their prod data and backups" and not enough "they had their backups in the same volume as their prod data"
If I understood their report correctly, this was a platform issue not theirs. They had backups as a separate abstraction from volumes, but a policy that deleting a volume also deleted the backups of a volume.
I don’t think it’s unreasonable to assume that, if a platform offers ‘backups of X’ as a feature then deleting X does not delete the backups (at least, not immediately. Deleting backups after some configurable grace period would be fine).
It was a slow month for next generation Covid vaccine results reporting, but a big month for clinical trial news:
- A new clinical trial for intranasal and inhaled versions of a vax is on the starting blocks in the US;
- Another intranasal vax trial has expanded to another 2 cities in the US; and
- A trial for a "variant-proof" vax going into phase 2a trial in Germany.
Plus some preclinical reports & more in my latest monthly update @PLOS
Another tragic story in Android development:
/me calls poll()
poll() returns EAGAIN
/me checks Linux manpage for poll()
manpage for poll() explicitly states that it's not supposed to return EAGAIN on Linux
End of story
The Greens, in contrast, have never led a NZ government. But they have a comprehensive policy platform, available on their website at all times, and give straight answers to policy questions. During this term they've even released at least 1 alternative budgets, laying out what they'd do in government and how they'd pay for it. All with a fraction of the resources Labour has.

Constantly building hype for the big election policy reveals makes Hipkins sound like another political used car salesman; Kim DotCom. That's not the best example to emulate, for both principled and pragmatic reasons.
I'll admit I was somewhat taken in by KDC's long con. But that's precisely why I'm much more sceptical now about politicians who talk a big game about the problems, but are suspiciously light on the details when it comes to solutions.

Who cares. Why would anyone use VK these days?
@chewbacca some people still do for some reason! I mostly use it for music these days, but even that is getting ruined fast. Also still somewhat useful for the original purpose of finding people by name/city/age, but locked profiles ruined that too.

Counting down the hours till the PyCon US hotels deadline (and to being done with these reminders😅)
Booking in the conference block makes a big impact on the event and the PSF<3
There is still a little time but not much! The last of the hotel blocks closes tomorrow!
Book in the official #PyConUS hotel block and get a mystery swag item.
We can't tell you what it is.
(That's why it's called mystery swag.)
Only way to get it is to book in the block.

A government ceremony to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the Showa Era on Wednesday was attended by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, and around 5,620 others. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2026/04/30/japan/japan-showa-era-100-year-anniversary-event/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #japan #showa #sanaetakaichi #emperornaruhito #empressmasako
@Edent thanks! Were you just browsing my blog?
@christianp yup! My stats plugin showed you'd linked to me at some point, so I was having a little nose around 😄
Approaching zero bugs?
Is it possible? Are we close? When will it happen?
https://daniel.haxx.se/blog/2026/04/30/approaching-zero-bugs/
It's theoretically possible but I'm not convinced that it can actually happen 😕
@can those sound much easier, i was mainly thinking of my desktop PC which doesn't really have that kind of noise
@halcy 🤔 what's the ELI5 version of why this is simpler than wind noise? Wind seems pretty consistent to my ear, so why not record the sound at the grates and adjust accordingly?

hahahaha this is wild
@slims I almost reported you for making me look at Zuck's face.
New blog post: I got tired of having repetitive arguments explaining why I think it’s OK to be skeptical of LLMs for coding, so I wrote six and a half thousand words on the topic that I will be referring people to from now on.
@renebekkers But I think most of the peer-review requests I get these days are in the form of "click here to accept, click here to decline". How do you feedback that your acceptance is conditional of data being provided? Do you decline and then add it as a comment?
And in some cases I need to see the full paper to find out if the data is there. Do you then first accept, check, and reject based on unavailable data?
@satrevik I just reply to the invitation email with the default response "without access to data I will have to decline". Editors want our services - the least they can do is write back. Occasionally a conversation emerges strengthening the confidence of the editor to ask the authors for access
It appears that VKontakte has just killed its largest third-party client app. Even though that app was previously officially approved by VK themselves, and implemented ads and music restrictions.
Who cares. Why would anyone use VK these days?
35,000 have now watched The Narcissist on YouTube.
Thank you to everyone who have shared this video, so we can expose Trump and win the midterms.

@rasterweb 700g in a 2qt is typical for me, at 450F, but over 75% hydration seems a lot, maybe just needed more time than the crust could take at temp?
@loppear Interesting. I’ll definitely lower the hydration next time.
