@neil oooo! I like most, to be honest - musicals were the mainstay of student theatre back when I was a student - but the standouts that spring to mind include:
Kiss of the Spider Woman
Guys and Dolls
Starlight Express
Hamilton
Les Mis
@gilester45 I love Starlight Express! I had forgotten about that. I've recordings of two very different versions, and I hear that the modern production is different again.
@neil Lots of good stuff here already, but I’d add “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum”, specifically the movie with Zero Mostel. Very, very silly
@neil I'm not usually that keen on musicals, so perhaps you're not interested in my opinion, but I've seen the fully improvised Showstopper a couple of times and enjoyed it.
@neil
Hadestown is my new favourite.
Into The Woods a close second.
I still love Cats no matter how ridiculous it is. Even the movie!
@neil I've gone off musicals over time. As a child I was lucky enough to see original productions of Camelot (julie Andrews!"), My Fair Lady, and The Sound of Music on Broadway. These days...I still like the movies of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Among recnet ones the only one that stands out is The Book of Mormon.
@neil Chicago for me. I could quote every line (and sing it badly)
@Jaimieserotica I only know the songs but, yes, I could sing along if required.
Which it rarely is.
@neil Return to the Forbidden Planet is one of my faves - but it is rarely done here in the US for some reason.
I've seen "Come From Away" multiple times. It is well worth seeing.
My greatest of all times musical is the original version of Side Show.
I'm also fond of Almost September - but as far as I know it hasn't been done since 1995.
My wife and I sponsored a production of Into The Woods last year (I've worked a couple of runs, so I've seen somewhere between 80 and 100 performances of that show.)
And Porgy and Bess - if one considers that a musical.
@neil “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “Fame” are probably on everyone's bucket list, right?
@neil return to the forbidden planet is definitely near the top :)
not many people seem to know the follow up From a Jack to a King (shakespeare's ither rock & roll musical)
@fallen_angela I'm not sure if I've seen that one or not - thank you!
@neil Rent and Cabaret.
