☠️ Vibe Coding Kills Open Source
「 When OSS is monetized only through direct user engagement, greater adoption of vibe coding lowers entry and sharing, reduces the availability and quality of OSS, and reduces welfare despite higher productivity. Sustaining OSS at its current scale under widespread vibe coding requires major changes in how maintainers are paid 」
The chief of the Los Angeles Police Department has publicly announced that the LAPD will not enforce a state law prohibiting federal agents from wearing masks in the state.
A big problem with policing is that it constitutes a local monopoly on the legitimate use of violence. So when those cops decide that they won’t enforce the law, or flagrantly break the law, as they do often do, they don’t suddenly become outlaw criminals themselves because *they possess the means to violently impose their preferences on the rest of society*.
They do whatever they want and everyone else is supposed to either hope that what the cops want aligns with public preferences, or adjust public preferences to align with the cops.
They’re not public servants; they’re a militia that has been deputized by the state to maintain the state’s rule over us.
@cwebber Neat setup!
Wondering about the monitor, does it fold down somehow?
Though maybe it doesn't need to, it doesn't look much bigger than a laptop
@ragman The monitor stand is separate and folds up. The monitor itself is very thin and fits in a felt envelope that came with it

@basker It took me like an hour of thinking "there must be an easier way" then failing to find it and figuring it out myself but yes... (I had to export to CSV, then write a Python script to generate the command line arguments in the right format with the right sections and offsets...)
@lina I tried this a while ago with no success, thats super cool
After just dropping off the car for an oil change and tire rotation at a new (to us) garage, I'm thinking about gender and auto repair.
The place I dropped it off at has gotten good reviews on the local electronic chatterboxes. It's your conventional, old-school garage. A wood-walled waiting area sparsely decorated with tires and tire stuff, one guy in a standard garage work uniform, smell of galvanized rubber, etc. 🧵
Marina Hyde on the Melania film premiere and grift.
"They should have dressed the event like a colon, since Donald’s is effectively where it was being held."
From ICE to Melania’s black carpet, are Trump’s techlords getting pangs of buyer’s remorse? - Marina Hyde
As long as Europe - and other countries - keep progressing the movement to 'tech sovereignty' we will pull US Big Tech away from Trump (just as our boycott already split Musk away). Our institutions, including governments and the EU itself, are already doing a lot, as we are as individuals - promoting, supporting and using European Alternatives.
I'm not sure if the UK is fully on board with this though ? It still seems happy to deal with Palantir, for example.
@CorinnaBaldauf I'm wracking my brain for the Alistair Cockburn "game" quote I used when teaching agile. But Covid has stolen so many memorybconnections. #sigh
Something about two kinds of game, short and long, or immediate and continuing …
Do you know the one I mean?
@deborahh @CorinnaBaldauf
I think the term was something like an infinite collaborative game. Where the outcome of one "round" is the setup of the next "round"
Opposed to a finite game where the are clear end criteria
@cwebber What kind of keyboard is this? I have a mighty need
This whole computing setup fits a single pouch of my backpack
@cwebber Neat setup!

300 amps sounds great.... for an ARC WELDER
@catsalad doing the math that’s around 4 megavolts. I’m not in love with that isolation distance!
@Yaku @enverdemichelis manca Umberto Smaila
@Micolcosta Aveva un impegno, una commemorazione per Epstein. @enverdemichelis
Funny how for years many iPad users (including me) asked Apple to create a shell/Terminal app for iPadOS. We were told that nobody cared, was unnecessary, no developer wanted to work on iPadOS anyway.
Guess where you CAN'T use Claude Code today?
@viticci Yes, please! One of the reasons I consider iPadOS less-than-pro is lack of a shell. SSH to a remote host is not a solution. It just means the iPad hardware remains underutilized.
@stefan @tchambers Oh, I get it, believe me. The value isn't lost. The issue, alas, is mostly technical/social as you'd need to get ALL servers using the same protocol to make this work (one of the downsides of federation) This doesn't mean we shouldn't try! It's just that it would have to be rolled out carefully (quote posts had the same problem)
If we were to try this, I'd like to consider rethinking Quiet Public as well (which is rather controversial) but 95+% of users don't understand it!
I will admit that ActivityPub is a bit over my head, but this response surprised me a bit.

I'm sure it's more complicated, but I hope that the ongoing conversations on this topic show how important this feature is for fediverse to succeed.
The Bondi Beach attack was against Chabad, and now there's been an attack on Chabad headquarters in NYC, though the driver claimed to be having trouble parking.
It should be noted that Chabad is historically anti-Zionist, though that became a bit more complicated after October 7.
I've finally had a chance to record myself giving my presentation for FOSDEM tomorrow. I can listen to this a few times this afternoon, and polish it.
I always make sure that I prepare to give a shorter presentation than my full timeslot, since, in my experience, there is nearly always some kind of delay in getting started, or running behind schedule etc. Plus, to allow time for questions.
But perhaps I have been *too* generous in keeping in short here, as it only runs for 12 minutes at the moment...
@neil same timing here. And you have one advance on many others: you are a native speaker English. You'll do fine 💙
Nurses are leaving the profession, and daily abuse from patients and families is one reason why.
More than 80% report workplace violence, often dismissed as “part of the job.”
A nurse practitioner explains why this crisis is worsening the nursing shortage:
