There is good news out today about the big, big shift from coal and gas to renewables! (It's news today because a major report came out from the Aus energy market operator.)
The following applies to the electricity grid covering Vic, Tas, SA, NSW, Qld but the news is also good for the WA grid.
(I pinched this summary from the Grattan Institute, removed some jargon and added some explanation.)
Renewables are up, fossil fuels down, emissions down, prices down.
Renewables met 51% of all electricity demand, a record high. Record output from rooftop solar and home batteries. Record output from wind (up 29% compared to a year ago) and large-scale solar (up 15%). Big battery discharge tripled.
Gas power generation at its lowest point since 2000. If, as the gas ads tell you, gas is needed to firm renewables, why is gas going down while renewables go up?
Coal power at its lowest point ever and emissions (climate pollution per unit of electricity) are at a record low.
Wholesale prices are down 44% to $50/MWh. The equal cheapest prices were in renewable-heavy SA at $37/MWh. More renewables + less gas = cheaper.
Gas consumption is down 3%. Queensland gas exports are down 10 PJ. Gas demand for electricity generation down 6 PJ. Gas production down in all regions.
These numbers indicate very, very rapid change in the good direction!

@sdw whoa!!! Psyched for you and for my future apps!

Anyone ever consider what all these brilliant minds attempting to squeeze 'decentralization' out of #Bluesky might be able to accomplish if they unleashed their talents on the #Fediverse? 🤷
@mastodonmigration Probably something like this:
On Bluesky, when you build new tools, you get widely reposted, if you do that on Mastodon, you get widely harassed…

And definitely time for bed now, so I'm shamelessly reposting one of my old ones with a night time vibe.

Think I might have imagined a woman in the supermarket last night
@TheBreadmonkey What if you weren't even in the supermarket last night, Ben? What if you were only imagined to be there by a real woman who was?
What if it was you who was in her daydream, not the other way around? What if you're a butterfly dreaming you're a man?
What if you're teetering on an epistemological cliff edge, and could fall at any moment? What if these are your final moments of sanity? 🤔
Honestly great news. You know when Zuckerberg goes "ALL IN" on something it's the tech equivalent of a death rattle.

You ever consider that if the mouse was invented before the keyboard, keyboard inventors probably would have put the 10-key pad on the left?
I wonder if I could teach myself to do reasonable 10-key input with my left hand. It sure would be nice for CAD when I'm drawing with the mouse and entering measurements along the way.
@raven Interesting thought. Instead I just use the mouse on my left hand. (I seem to be largely right handed in other respects.)
@KuramaSuben @fetchezlavache You can install the wen app from the menu. It says "add to home screen" or something like that.
@David @fetchezlavache
Thanks for the hint. I'll check it out later when I have a little bit more time.

Qualified immunity
@MichaelTBacon I tried that with one of mine, it ended up sitting on my drive for about a decade (I ended up getting kinda lucky at that point).
I'm not sure what the journal ecosystem looks like for you, but maybe try the second 'biggest' to see how things go? There's a ton of randomness in decisions, and I often find it challenging to remember that when trying to just get something landed.
@mplouffe The other annoyance is that this started out as about 22k words from my dissertation which I painfully chiseled down to 9600 words to fit this journal. My next-down journal choices mostly have an 8k word limit which means I have yet another round of chiseling before I can submit.
But thanks for your kind words and advice.
