@urlyman I don't see any need to change laptops every 3 or 4 years ... all of the laptops in my house are way older than that ... some close to 20 years old.
My still working C128 is 40 years old.
There is a certain time period of all dead computers ... that dreadful bad capacitor period. But other than that, the computers have held up as well as my typewriter. (Which is not actually in a fully working state, nor will it ever be.)

One of the most useful things I learned working on open source was the ability to usefully cooperate with people who had different goals. Finding the place where our requirements overlap and the things that are necessary for both.
I think a lot of people in the F/OSS ecosystem try to have this mindset but there’s a big difference between working with people whose goals are different from yours and working with people whose goals are completely antithetical to yours. If I want to empower users and you want to kill immigrants and gay people, that isn’t a ‘well, we can at least agree the UI should be better’ situation, that’s a ‘there is no world in which we both get what we want’ situation.
It’s very important to make that distinction.

After a short sidequest about SMTP servers, it looks like I will have to adjust ryoms to work as an OpenSMTPD filter, rather than as a milter.
The two protocol share similarities, but... not quite. I wonder if I want to support both milter and opensmtpd-filter protocols?
Or perhaps... use my own protocol, and have frontends / adaptors to map the various protocols (milter, opensmtpd-filter, and possibly rspamd) to the internal one.
I think this latter option is the best, because that makes it easier to adapt to whatever smtpd, which in turn, makes it easier for others to use it too.
While ryoms is (currently) my own toy, and I don't want anyone to use it yet, the longer term plan is that, like iocaine, it will be usable by others too.
Now, for what ryoms does, I only need a few phases:

ryoms currently has checks in the mail, rcpt, header, and end_of_message milter phases, which map to mail-from, rcpt-to and post-data respectively.
I'm not sure it's worth having a header phase. In many cases, it's easier to let the entire message arrive, and process it as a complete email.

For Labor Day I'm simmering turkey brats in a quart of Heineken and grilling them, and putting them in buns with sauteed onions and bell peppers. I'll save the liquid as a base to boil potatoes in for zuppa toscana. Also found a place that carries 6-packs of Stiegl grapefruit radler, which is the best hot weather thirst quencher I know of.
