I mean brey, you don't HAVE an opposition party. You have two parties that represent rich people; one of them is openly Nazi and the other one is openly classist.
The idea that I would have to choose to support one of those two parties because rich people aren't giving me any other options is on its face insane and insulting.

@charliejane god, I so hear you about just not finding OUT about good stuff before it's gone. I have a few friends who diligently trawl through the Internets looking for stuff, but it feels like serendipitous discovery is getting harder, not easier.
Not only did my public library have Hardware Wars, they did a community screening of it! I love my libraries but it's hard to imagine any of them doing something that weird now.

When I first used Emacs, there weren't many starter packs around. I tried Doom for a bit after and found it pretty good. But I went back to a hand-rolled config, mostly embracing things that Emacs can do by itself now and reducing the number of external packages.
BTW, I was serious about tramp-rpc. If you use Emacs to edit files remotely, it's a significantly better experience!

@sundogplanets Baseball in a cup in it's side (Universal Transverse Mercator) for north-south aligned areas of interest where you need to keep distance distortions low and traffic cone on a basketball (Lambert Conformal Conic) for east-west. Engineers and surveys still need to turn angles and travel distances to land navigate and distance distortions are easy to correct. Where the sportsball intersects the container there are no distance distortions, nearby they are small enough to ignore.
@lykso i say that because he was unfortunately completely right that allocating path strings repeatedly will never ever come close to the time it takes to perform any VFS predicate syscall (e.g. open() or stat(), both of which accept a path string). i hated that he was right so much because i couldn't fucking BELIEVE that in fact no filesystem designer has ever once given a single shit about making the value of an inode meaningful to the application developer who is specifically performing VFS traversals and therefore is not interested in setting up a formal open()/close() relationship with a file descriptor
@lykso linux has the most half-assed possible way to respond to this which is to add an O_PATH bit to the open{at,{2}}() flags argument so you can express to the kernel "i do not care about the data contained in this thing whatsoever, just tell me if it exists and what type of thing it is". that was surprisingly legitimate and this is why linus torvalds is so effective at achieving truly evil shit (because he recognizes that criticism from people who give a shit about doing things the right way is a valuable source of input)
