@gedankenstuecke Oh yeah, I had to (re)install Win 11 for a family member and as you say the dark patterns are crazy. And they continue after the installation with various prompts for Disk/Drive whatever it's called and similar data extraction mechanisms.

Even knowing about them ahead of time I almost fell into several of those traps.

I don't own a car. I take public transit everywhere, and I do think personal vehicle use has real environmental costs. But I don't think driving is inherently unethical.

I live in Seoul, and the city makes transit easy for me. That's not a virtue. It's a condition I happen to benefit from. Some people live where transit barely exists, or where it doesn't get them to work, school, or care. In those places, driving is not optional.

The same is true of flying. In parts of Europe you can cross borders by train. In island nations, or in places with weak land connections, flying may be the only realistic option. “Just fly less” means very different things in those places.

A lot of what gets called my ethical choices comes from the conditions I live in. That makes me wary of turning structural failures into personal morality. If the alternative is missing or unusable, shaming people for not choosing it solves nothing.

When environmental harm gets framed as individual moral failure, attention shifts away from the structural changes that would actually matter. It's not an accident that oil companies spent decades popularizing the idea of the personal carbon footprint.

@Elizafox In terms of news events? Death of Princess Diana, which I mostly remember as 'all the adults were very sad about a nice-looking lady on the TV and it was weird and awkward for a couple of weeks'.

(I was four, I didn't really understand things like death, or celebrities, or parasocial relationships.)

the brainfuck I did as an emacs language workbench demo now has syntax highlighting (every symbol gets its own color cause why not) and is more or less feature complete

it feels like a success that the file defining the language contains a reader, expander, and major mode but it’s still pretty short and straightforward, so you can just bash out a quick domain-specific language in full if the need arises

anyway next up: the minor mode that automatically selects the major mode defined for the language (easy). fixing the bug that makes parsing buffers sensitive to the current value of (point) (medium?). read with position support (also medium?). fix load resolution for byte and native files (ugggh). see about converting languages into executables via LIMPLE (extremely hard).

Dolly Parton and Gloria Steinem within one week is a lot.

September is national Library Card Sign-Up Month (in the USA) & I know that because last week I finally got an eCard from my LPL and now I can read news w/o ads including that tidbit about library cards in the Woodland, CA Daily Democrat.
