@dragon @sarahghp @SRAZKVT i also do not believe w3c compliance is a remotely interesting or useful goal. the web is created to be impossible to keep up with (much like activitypub). literally fuck the web. i want interactive documents with canvas and shader APIs. i want to import from a goddamn file:// URL. i want to fuck around
@dragon @sarahghp @SRAZKVT emacs has been investigating this recently and they have done some fantastic research into the fundamentals of graphics rendering (cc @tusharhero). in particular
- the canvas patchset is a remarkably concise demonstration of how straightforward it is to send emacs a completely unstructured sheet of pixels
- structured IPC to send things like mouse clicks and copying text is basically "what if wayland was designed for bidirectional communication"
- the cairo skia experiment does some fantastically thorough investigation of the cpu/gpu computation
these two came up in the context of an LLM slop submission claiming to add gpu support https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/emacs-devel/2026-06/msg00299.html and imo together they make a really strong argument that pairing emacs to a GPU is kind of orthogonal to what emacs (the C program and lisp environment, which i am anthropomorphizing) wants from graphical inputs and outputs
