It was such a great experience to join the open source conference in luxembourg!
Huge thanks to the amazing @_elena@mastodon.social and @Gina@fosstodon.org for organising and curating the Decentralised Technologies for Digital Sovereignty track, It brought together lots of the people and conversations we need right now.
And thanks to @samvie@chaos.social to keep pushing the fediverse forwards ✊️

Very excited to officially kickstart our @Bonfire@bonfire.cafe server at Warwick and to be able to codesign it with fellow researchers!
@mat@friendica.exon.name @news@wedistribute.org documented here for now: github.com/bonfire-networks/...
@news @Bonfire Nice. I mean, it sounds like you've had to implement a parallel data store to support this, which doesn't sound fun and might discourage other implementations from trying it. But it proves the idea.
The moderation side: yeah, the activity can be shown to moderators, but e.g. {"type": "WeirdUseCase", "content": "Friendly content", "weird:specialField": "Evil content"} will show only the friendly content, not the evil content. This is surely not the most pressing moderation issue right now, but I bet it'll show up eventually.
@mat@friendica.exon.name @news@wedistribute.org good point, we can add a menu option for mods to view the full JSON
Bonfire is capable of storing totally unfamiliar activities
I did not know this! Does this mean that Bonfire stores the full RDF of the activities it receives? I don't know any other large project that does this. Anywhere I can read more about the implementation?
One problem I thought of with this, is that your server can end up storing and forwarding data that is hidden to moderators. I can think of a few mitigations, but I'm interested what @Bonfire is doing.
Yeah the server stores the JSON for any objects that aren't implemented by any extension enabled on the instance, but also display those in feeds and threads, with a best effort to generate a preview based on looking for common metadata properties, so they can still be flagged and displayed in moderation queues.

@gaetan@mediapart.social l'integration avec ghost n'est qu'un exemple, l'important c'est la flexibilité et notre approach de co-design pour construire quelque chose d'unique avec chaque communautée, plutot que d'offrire un seule plateforme pour tout le monde

Coming to the Open Source Conference in Luxembourg today? @oscl@mastodon.opencloud.lu 🇱🇺
Come say hi! At 15:30 we'll talk about digital sovereignty, why it's more than a server, what is the ecosystem we're building towards and keep asking ourselves: where's Franca? 🔥

Introducing Fedizen, Our Bonfire Project
So, I want to set general expectations before kicking things off officially.
Yes, We Distribute is launching a #Bonfire community and will be collaborating with the devs to build a unique flavor of it. We're still in the process of getting the basics set up, so please...be gentle.
I still have a few chores to do before pulling some levers and migrating our old Akkoma accounts over, but I'm really excited! We've wanted to do Bonfire for a long time!
Belgian journalism cooperative Apache is going to be testing Bonfire as a space for its readers, inspired by #Jacobin work in Germany.
Independent media building community spaces where readers and journalists can meet, participate, and connect across the fediverse. This is the kind of social web we want to support.
Their ongoing diary of leaving big tech is worth a read (in Dutch): apache.be/vaarwel-big-tech
@texttheater Maybe @Bonfire?
@tommi@pan.rent @texttheater@mastodon.social Indeed, boundaries in bonfire differentiate between something being discoverable vs readable, allowing for "unlisted" content that can only be viewed by certain people and on the other hand "previewable" content that can be seen in feeds but not fully read. This is currently mostly low-level functionality so we'd be happy to co-design the UX with people who need these features and can also help test if/how they interoperate with other federated apps and how we can mitigate leaks...
Currently working on a #FEP called "Concept Relationships of ActivityPub objects for Federated Classification".
Probably there will be a first internal review amongst @lauti, @Bonfire and @mobilizon before the first draft is submitted to the FEP repository.

@lebout2canap@mastodon.tedomum.net fixed, thanks! @gardian@social.manade.org
It would be pretty cool to have a fediverse version of ResearchGate. Someone should look into that. Someone with a lot more free time than me.
@benlockwood@ecoevo.social openscience.network goes beyond that 👋
Originally published on Princeton’s Center for Information Technology Policy blog, this article by @s0hw@hci.social and @andresmh@hci.social reflects on a semester of collaboration with Bonfire. Together, we explored how Governance Cards could help communities describe how they organise and govern their shared spaces.
Community rules will ship alongside federated groups in the upcoming Bonfire release 🎉
