We’re doing “how fast Farah can finish a bowl of pho” challenge
@farah oooooh! So good.
PLEASE BOOST
I have a friend who is on iPad who needs a Mastodon app that can be used successfully with voice commands. He does not have use of his hands. He tried the official Mastodon app and finds it unusable. Is there another app that might be better? ACTUAL experience helps. Please don't Google this for me or try to give advice on using an iPad. He's a very advanced user. Thank you!
I wrote a whole blog (several, in fact) about the need to break the ransomware economy cycle and still believe it’s the most urgent and important thing governments can do to protect civil society.
Having orgs pay ransoms, including via sham cybersecurity vendors, is directly harming society.
Maybe once the AI bubble pops, we can get back to having serious conversations about the harm the status quo has caused.
I've warned before that any FOSS project incorporating AI output is doing so at their peril.
Previously people leaned on a federal circuit ruling that was *declined to be taken up by the supreme court* interpreting it as a free-for-all to LLM license-wash any project in translation, or really to incorporate any such materials and they would be public domain.
But that doesn't mean we have an answer! We've yet to see!
Annnnnnnnnd: I think we're likely to have that perspective upended soon.
The third circuit issued a recent ruling in the *opposite direction* of the previously well cited federal ruling, that AI training on copyrighted material is NOT fair use: https://www.courthousenews.com/ai-training-of-copyrighted-material-not-fair-use-third-circuit/
Annnnndddddd.... with a bunch of people trying to make LLM-generated decompilation replacements for Adobe's entire suite, we're likely to suddenly see corporations rear up angrily.
Just wait till someone tries to vibewash a Nintendo game decompilation. Hey, what do you think is gonna happen?
Kind of hard to believe that it has been 32 years since #Apple first released the M1. Back then you could buy it separately.
@ernie As you are a creative person who asks to be paid for their work, I was not expecting a “stealing is okay because I don’t like Adobe” vibe. In the post, you ask if this is legal, but I think we all agree decompiling (vs. reimplementing, say) is clearly illegal. Whereas Adobe charging high prices and having disagreeable policies is clearly not illegal. I worry about a future in which nobody gets recognized or paid for their work. Thanks for the thought-provoking post!
@DavidAnson my point, to be clear, was not intended to be pro-stealing, but rather to come out in favor of the the ground up approach that fostered it.
When I wrote what I wrote, I was thinking in terms of BIOSes and similar approaches to reverse engineering.
@jpmens in fairness Deutsche Bahn doesn't go to Sants.
Are you planning your trip to Geomob Barcelona on the 21st?
@freyfogle DB Navigator shows me an endless list of stations in/around/out of Barcelona, and I chose something that sounded familiar. Why the heck they can't say ".. Central" (in the appropriate language) is beyond me. (Same applies to cities in France, btw.)
No, sadly, not, but I am very vaguely thinking about January. You can't see it, but I have underlined "vaguely".
Got a pack of Buldak ramen to try (cheese flavour) and they're both VERY TASTY and TOO HOT for me so second go I'm adding less of the spicy sauce and adding a bunch of other stuff in, and I think they'll be delicious.
Hey, #STS folks,
I'm starting to get very annoyed by the lack of STS insights into the public discussions of AI.
I would like to jump in on this and write something but I want it to be extremely grounded in empirical research and broad STS literature, and while I'm pretty well read in the discipline there's a lot I'm missing.
Anyone who has a history of tech specialty on any kind of military or transportation tech would be great.
Anyway, I'm looking to collaborate. Please respond and/or boost freely.
I feel like I’ve climbed a mountain after a measly 15 min walk
Interestingly Watch says I put much more effort than usual. I wonder how they measure it
@farah probably heart rate
In just a few weeks, the discovery of the Sony root kit will be old enough to drink.
Linux Magazine talked to us about how and why we build Bonfire.
What we want next is "not a bigger Bonfire, but a network of cooperatives covering the whole supply chain of a community's digital space", who "do it together" rather than leave you to "do it yourself".
Because "federation, we don't see it as just a technical thing. We see it as a social, economic, and political tool as well."

You see the program doesn't know shit fuck all about this hockey game even though it pretends it does. It's doing internet searches in real time. But EA is a terrible company that never explains ANYTHING going on in their games. So most of the information available about how to play this game comes from where? Forums, like Reddit, where people who play this game congregate and discuss it.
Can you guess the problem yet?
Yeah, Gamers lie for clout. So they're out there saying "I got this player for 60% less than YOU got him, aren't I so much cleverer than you?"
so the AI saw the lies, lies that if you were part of the community you'd KNOW are lies, and confidently told my friend he could resign all his players at "Cap on the Internet" rates. Save ruined. Start over.
"Será uma produção de miséria sem precedentes.
Vale lembrar também que isso terá consequências, por exemplo, para o comércio em geral, já que as pessoas terão de reduzir as compras ao essencial - e mesmo o essencial tende a ter seu consumo reduzido."
