so, you know that moment when you're reading the newspaper, and for once it happens to be a story you already know like the back of your hand? Maybe you were there, maybe you're just an expert in the field - but you know this story and the background behind it. And when you read the story in the paper you suddenly realize the media doesn't know its ass from its elbow, you can see exactly where their blind spots are, and you start questioning e/t else in the paper?
So, when my cat dies, I am simply not answering any fluff/personal/gaming messages right? If your house is burning down, I'll answer that message but I ain't taking questions on "how to video hockey right now."
So my friend, turns to his friend, AI. And the AI very confidently tells him how to manage his franchise - who to trade for, who to play on what line, and crucially how to do contract negotiations to keep his team together. It does all the projections for him.
Setting aside that I'd ask myself "wait am I even PLAYING the game if I'm just doing what the AI says" - you will not be surprised to learn that the AI was wrong, and now his save is ruined because all the numbers the computer gave him were too low.
That's not the story tho. The story is why they were too low.
You see the program doesn't know shit fuck all about this hockey game even though it pretends it does. It's doing internet searches in real time. But EA is a terrible company that never explains ANYTHING going on in their games. So most of the information available about how to play this game comes from where? Forums, like Reddit, where people who play this game congregate and discuss it.
Can you guess the problem yet?
Yeah, Gamers lie for clout. So they're out there saying "I got this player for 60% less than YOU got him, aren't I so much cleverer than you?"
so the AI saw the lies, lies that if you were part of the community you'd KNOW are lies, and confidently told my friend he could resign all his players at "Cap on the Internet" rates. Save ruined. Start over.
Yeah, so yesterday I had that moment, sort of second hand with AI.
I hooked a friend of mine on EA's video hockey series, franchise mode. Mostly because I'm a freak and grind out multiple 96 game seasons, so I have a pretty deep Franchise Mode experience.
Anyway, this friend is also an AI guy. Not like a raging nazi, but definitely one of those people who thinks you just don't understand what a great asset Claude has been to him or whatever. Anyway, this story is going someplace I promise.
