While examining 'Snowy' the Snowy Owl for injuries, staff at Woodlands Wildlife Sanctuary in Canada couldn't help but take a picture. And we're all glad they did. Want to donate to WWS? https://woodlandswildlifesanctuary.ca/donate Source: https://fb.com/260048249491707 #owlsintowels #owltober 💛🦉

@happydisciple @swaldman @patrick @quixoticgeek Aside from all the independence drawbacks (hasn't @jon had a story where he bought 2 tickets together but 1 passenger couldn't make the trip and SNCF made a fuss because the name didn't match?), I wonder what's the incentive model for railways to offer "travel together" discounts?
Coarse market segmentation between single business travelers vs. families and groups of friends? Convincing families/friends not to use a car?
@cycling_on_rails @happydisciple @swaldman @patrick @jon to try and convince us they aren't running an extortion racket.
Amazon Prime Big Deal Days are today and tomorrow and I've collected our favorite @macstories deals.

@swaldman @jon @patrick @quixoticgeek The NL approach is the “samenreiskorting”, where others can profit off your discount card on a per-journey basis.
Nowadays they/their ticket need(s) to specifically be associated to your discount card, so it’s a bit of a faff, but it’s much more fluid than a railcard with a specific named person.

@pluralistic : "This is a world of material abundance and prosperity. Just as the post-war world made millions of people comfortable, educated and happy by putting them to work clearing the rubble and building something better, a post-oligarch, post-American world can offer us all all the hard, rewarding work we want, performing the essential work of care and rebuilding."
What a beautiful world this will be
What a glorious time to be free

Ported the Xogot Modeler to vanilla Godot, the UI is GDScript instead of SwiftUI, but we can bring it to Windows and Linux:

It still has a lot of bugs, but pretty psyched.
The nearest I came to that is an article that can be found at https://www.fastcompany.com/90374429/how-etsy-taught-style-to-an-algorithm that referenced a paper written by Etsy staff
"Etsy’s data scientists have written a paper about it—coauthored with a Twitter employee—which they’ll present at the Association for Computing Machinery’s KDD (Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining) conference"
I'm wondering if the blog post would have something to do with the aforementioned paper?
@happy I'll take a look.

Verbunden in Angst – Der 7. Oktober 2023 hat auch hierzulande den jüdisch-muslimischen Dialog gekappt. Ein Verlust für uns alle. Der FR-Leitartikel.

@alextomkins That seems sensible to me?
@neil Depends if it's at a reasonable cost, at a high cost because it's mobile, or if they get ripped off because it's a government contract.
Maybe it's all absolutely fine - hard to judge it's not publicly known.
My gut instinct prefers to avoid anything that harms net neutrality., Allowing networks to pick chosen providers of content that are data free ends up harming those that aren't "free".
Sigh, more emails from prospective students who use chatgpt tracking codes in their emails asking about PhD programs.
As a scientist who does participatory research, the idea at the heart of my work is the trusting human connection between people.
I disregard such outreach from decisions in whatever form it takes, but my heart sinks when I see people who, for whatever reason, feel pressured to treat one of the most significant intellectual relationships of their lives as just another unit in a decision-making system.

Not content with mere plagiarism and copyright infringement, it looks like #OpenAI is adding forgery. How long till they start synthesizing provenance records, and thus progress into falsification of business records and, once cash is exchanged, fraud as well?
If anyone wants to take the title “From Stochastic Parrots to Stochastic Pirates 🏴☠️” and run with it, please do, but be sure to credit @emilymbender, @timnitGebru, et al for the original (unless you are they).
@permacomputer VIC EDITYPE BASIC text editor research log.
I have been studying the core loop of the program.
What happens is a tight loop around:
120 GET C$:IF C$="" THEN GOTO 120
And then after we test for special menu characters, we echo the character, using a semicolon to prevent a newline:
PRINT C$;
then a little layer, append the character to the line:
A$(K)=A$(K)+C$
And that's the magic for NEW mode, where the user composes their text.
@dirtycommo @permacomputer have you tried describing the algorithm it in terms of pseudocode? like
first the building blocks, read a byte and print a byte.
Then read a line (the most basic editing is just delete and arrow keys, jumpt to start and end of line)
Then multiline editing using the line editor.
Finally or at some point paging, the way I see it is pager+readline=editor :)
old forth editors don't even have a pager alla' unix, it just reads another block and edit inside that range.
i am trying to form my own abstract script - looking at tangut, voynich, futhark, mayan, book from sky, and so on.
i want a squarish thing.
@casy ooooh
Got to my hotel. The WiFi is essentially unusable. And 4g signal is almost non existent. I guess I get to actually disconnect for the evening and read my book.
Yay!
Making tiny tiny books. With tiny tiny puzzles in them. Will be handing them out to our street team (the corvids) for distribution across the Isles.
