@docpop I'd start with one of his later albums, actually, like "The Future," and move backwards from there.

I fell for the Booking.com WhatsApp scam today. There has apparently been a #databreach at #bookingcom, which provides a little bit of truth to this "please verify your credit card now" scam. They knew my name, my phone number, the hotel I was staying at and the exact dates. That, a little bit of time pressure and a potential quick solution got me.

I managed to complete the flow once, which according to them would only reserve the money. Something failed and I tried again. This time they were asking me to confirm the balance of my account for verification, and that finally triggered the alert for me.

I'm retrospect, the originating WhatsApp number was located in Brazil (which was not where I was going). The name didn't match the name of the Hotel representative in the message, and the website's title was Booking.com, which didn't match the actual host name in the URL. I didn't notice.

Approach shit like this calmly and don't let people push you to rash decisions.

I see that National is promising to raise Pharmac's budget to improve medicine access, but will do so by cutting foreign aid.

I'm tired of this zero-sum cruelty. Here's what should happen instead:

1. Rewrite Pharmac's terms of reference so that it has flexibility in its approach to medicine negotiations and so that it prioritises patient health instead of the austerity-style budget rules it has now (and maybe completely overhaul the Orwellian 'health economics' rules that they use to determine the value of your life.)

2. Yes, raise its budget (a long overdue step), but don't do so by cutting other healthcare or foreign aid or education. Do it by taxing f$%&king landlords and corporations. They don't die of preventable diseases.

3. And it should go without saying: fund *all* healthcare properly: medicine access is just one part of a system that is collapsing under the weight of neo-liberal greed. A pill doesn't replace a coordinated system of care.

I grew up in a cult. And this is the first article on this stuff that has clearly captured the cultishness — if saying no to something loses your friends, house, job, and community… you are definitely in a cult.

And this is like five of them.

On Monday nights, we get to hear the sounds of a Conspiracy of Beards rehearsing across the street. It’s wonderful, but they only perform the music of Leonard Cohen, who I know nothing about.

What’s a good album to get acquainted with Leonard’s work?

Happy 20th birthday, Link, the old paper I worked at in the late 2000s.

It’s strange to think that a job that I was laid off from nearly 20 years ago proved so influential to my life. Not gonna lie, I still miss it.

Fun Facts: When you're writing for live radio (so, no chance to edit!) there are key aspects rather different from ordinary writing (that people will read). One important aspect is to make sure that you have inline notes that remind you of correct pronunciations of anything at all tricky (I simply write such words phonetically in my scripts). And it's also crucial to write in sentences short enough so that you don't run out of breath in embarrassing ways. Similarly, it's essential to test read scripts out loud to make sure you haven't written in any "tongue twisters" that are fine to read but a mess to say out loud! Unfortunately, the script itself (like any ordinary transcript) cannot reasonably give readers the full impact of the spoken version, since inflection, timing, emphasis, sarcasm, and more are typically lost in the written version when read later.

@Hearth @ziphi The dual of Mew for when you have exactly a pair of them, is Mewtwo.

(Past that the plural is, uh, Meowth. I think.)
