I've wanted to build a mixed-script Korean input method for more than ten years, and I finally started building it.

The project is called Bibim. Korean, Japanese, and Chinese share a lot of Sino-derived words written with Chinese characters, even when the readings differ. Bibim uses those characters as the bridge: if you're writing Japanese and can't remember the Japanese reading of 博物館 (“museum”), you can type the Korean reading (bangmulgwan) instead, and it will recover the characters for you.

I finished the design doc today. If you're into CJK writing systems, East Asian languages, or input method development, I'd love feedback.

This is the equivalent of the "rubber hose method" of decryption.

All technical solutions (read: all technology) is subject to politics. To political power. To political interactions.

You cannot rely on purely technical approaches. You have to have social approaches, too. Like. Actual policy and procedure geared around social and political group dynamics.

Like. How will we react when the US Govt requires that @jerry to shut off infosec.exchange servers.

Or how we'll react when a specific Mastodon server is declared part of a terrorist infrastructure. Will federating with it mean any other Mastodon server is now part of the officially designated terrorist network (what then of people that federate with a server that federates with a server that is classified as part of a terrorist network. And so on)

You cannot carry the conceit that tech alone or a purely technical approach will save you.

I love to imagine the conception of the world where there is some set of "all things that can be done" and the space between each thing is smooth and traversable using a generic/universal mechanism - "if you can do 10/100 things, its only a matter of time until you can do 100/100 things". Like, language is probably the closest thing we have to such a mechanism, but the metaphor I use in my mind for this is "just because we can dig a well doesn't mean we can tunnel to the center of the earth" or "just because you can walk up stairs doesn't mean you can climb K2". even if the difference is actually just some scalar valued quantity like "elevation", traversing some regions of elevations are just a qualitatively different things than others.

Its not moving goalposts to say like while the LLMs have certainly proven to be capable of more things over time with more compute, and the things they can't do are abstract and intangible, those things are the most important things.

So many folks in the last 10+ years seem to have only used the consumer messaging platforms, social platforms, or e-mail.

@Tutanota I understand the hate about Brave but you have to look at the big picture and how they contribute to a more private internet. If we want more people to drop Chrome, we need alternatives that are easy to adopt. Sorry but outside this community, Firefox and its 30 minutes to set it up correctly does not help Brave does. Install it and it's ready to go, ads blocked, cookies banners as well.... Another big contribution is Brave Search the only real independent search engine
