If you're not from Canada, what are stereotypes you believe or used to believe about Canadians? What did you learn as a child, or what assumptions were you left with? I'm curious!
When I was a kid, I think the first thing that would have leapt to mind at the mention of Canada would have been Dudley Do-Right:
@idzie I'd always heard that Canadians were very nice and polite, but I've realized that is not quite accurate. I've only been to Canada twice, but both times I was impressed by the kindness people showed toward strangers. It was a genuine care for fellow humans.
@idzie That they had really really good songs 😜 So many good folksingers.... some popular, some to be discovered.
And it was where you could go to get away from Slavery.
Oh, and that the French speakers could be real snobs.
"As New Zealanders are to Australians, as Ukrainians are to Russians, as Portuguese are to Spanish, so the Canadians are to Americans: basically the same people but it's rude to say it to their faces."
@idzie growing up in NZ I was told your culture was similar to us (reserved people) and that Australians were more similar to Americans!
@idzie To be honest, I don't think we heard much about Canada growing up in Austria or living in the UK. So I had few preconceptions before visiting.* I think the most surprising/confusing part were the variants of French and English spoken. French Canadians don't seem to agree with French people on the names for meal times 😅, and Canadian English seems to pick and choose between UK and US variants and spellings… & sometimes something else entirely. 🤨
(* Has it really been 13 years? Goodness…)
@idzie Hockey, maple syrup, and are you people really so nice? It’s terrible here.
