If you're not from Canada, what are stereotypes you believe or used to believe about Canadians? What did you learn as a child, or what assumptions were you left with? I'm curious!
When I was a kid, I think the first thing that would have leapt to mind at the mention of Canada would have been Dudley Do-Right:
@catselbow nooo horrible children's copaganda lol
@idzie I'd always heard that Canadians were very nice and polite, but I've realized that is not quite accurate. I've only been to Canada twice, but both times I was impressed by the kindness people showed toward strangers. It was a genuine care for fellow humans.
@ratvet that has not been my experience living here 😅
@idzie hi, I'm Danish and currently believe that Canada is barely a real nation state. I perceive it more like a colonial, extractive project with French/English origins. Or perhaps a settler state (like Israel) is more accurate. Something between a mining company and an illegal settlement...
I mean absolutely no disrespect to Canadians. I vibe with most Canadians I have met, which has been mostly from Montreal or Quebec
@magnus every nation-state is fake, and none should exist as far as I'm concerned, so you won't hear an argument from me. But when it comes to Canada its purpose being pretty much solely resource extraction (build on theft and genocide) is especially stark.
"As New Zealanders are to Australians, as Ukrainians are to Russians, as Portuguese are to Spanish, so the Canadians are to Americans: basically the same people but it's rude to say it to their faces."
@idzie growing up in NZ I was told your culture was similar to us (reserved people) and that Australians were more similar to Americans!
@clarkiestar oh that's funny
@idzie To be honest, I don't think we heard much about Canada growing up in Austria or living in the UK. So I had few preconceptions before visiting.* I think the most surprising/confusing part were the variants of French and English spoken. French Canadians don't seem to agree with French people on the names for meal times 😅, and Canadian English seems to pick and choose between UK and US variants and spellings… & sometimes something else entirely. 🤨
(* Has it really been 13 years? Goodness…)
@pmdj oh yeah, a confusing web of terms and spelling lol
@idzie Hockey, maple syrup, and are you people really so nice? It’s terrible here.
@FeloniousPunk the first two are certainly accurate for my part of the country(I'm in walking distance of commercial sugar bush lol), but the last one? Ehhhh not so much.
@idzie In the global backpacking scene, they're the most likely to have a national flag patch on their backpack, to prevent people who hear their accent from thinking they're from the USSA
