"Could #AI be conscious?" asks the Guardian, continuing with "Experts believe it’s at least possible. We urgently need a plan to navigate the ethical implications."
Really? I mean, we *know* many, many non-human animals are conscious and we collectively have no plan to navigate the ethical implications of that.
In fact, we have an entire economic system designed to absolutely avoid and negate the ethical implications of their sentience so we can keep on exploiting them.
To be a bit more specific, it's the Guardian asking, it's William MacAskill and Lucius Caviola, who are respectively "a Scottish philosopher and cofounder of the effective altruism movement" and an "Assistant Professor in the Social Science of AI at the University of Cambridge".
Not surprised to see this coming from one the main AE figureheads, whose ex-wife is a philosopher working at Anthropic (and before that OpenAI) and in charge of "Claude's personality and constitution".
