The Citizens United comparison is stark worth noting billionaire donors span both parties, so it's less a partisan story and more a structural one about who gets a megaphone.
@rbreich I think this $ figure is kind of meaningless. It says something, but consider this: If you're Elon Musk and you own twitter/X then your cost of pulling levers not going to show up anywhere since it's zero. The same applies to Facebook, TikTok and YouTube.
It also occurs to me that there's a new avenue for election influence: what happens if you ask those "AI" chat bots "Who should I vote for in the midterms?". I suspect that the answer won't be random though the "AI" companies will probably claim it is.

Citizens United was the beginning of the end for the United States and democracy.
Donald Trump and those like him are only a symptom of a much larger problem.
