@mekkaokereke yup, I agree with you, but I didn't have time to read her, so I don't know if she said literally that (not agree) or rather that rich people might not be directly fash but support fash for their (perceived) benefit (not all, but a recurring fact in history). Having read and listen to her many times before, I hope this has a more nuanced interpenetration (or not).

Look, I don't like the Silicon Valley rich for a number of reasons, but we had *generations* of Silicon Valley rich that were not the horrible fascist cabal that we have now. Nuance matters.

It's not their wealth, but the way they have accumulated it reflects their true nature.

A complete lack of moral code that allowed them to lie, steal and cheat. A complete lack of empathy that allows them to fire large amounts of people in order to make earnings calls. Knowingly developing systems that harm people's mental health, that spread misinformation, etc, etc...as long as it earns money.

Money is their scorecard for life.

@mekkaokereke I was going to do my own thread on this topic. making many of the same points you've made here. Klein massively overstates her case, which is disappointing from her. While it may be true that extreme wealth amplifies and entrenches pre-existing views - and insulates those holding them from any obligation to engage with criticism - there's ample evidence that these tech bros always leaned far-right, politically.

@mekkaokereke I have always said that there are good and shitty people who are and are not religious, and religious belief or lack thereof has nothing to do with whether a person is good or shitty. Shitty person will be shitty whether they are religious or not. Kind person will be kind whether they are religious or not. Sounds familiar to me. These techbro examples were deranged and emotionally stunted already.

@mekkaokereke One of the biggest "tells" in Musk's past is his private South African high school, which was white only for quite some time - and then VERY discriminatory, for years and years, with a white-centric "code of silence" and routine and sometimes vicious bullying by the rich, white students.

Elon left S. Africa for a reason. Integration after the fall of Apartheid - and the obligation to do national service - was what young Elon chose to run away from.

There's lots of evidence that rich people have less empathy...and also that people with low or no empathy (sociopaths) are more likely to become rich. (I wrote a book that discussed that.) They're deranged already. The money unleashes them, justifies their behaviour, removes accountability.
