For more than 100 consecutive days, global sea surface temperatures have hovered at record‑breaking highs. On 9 September, the global average sea surface temperature reached 21.23°C.
That sounds quite pleasant if you think of the ocean as a swimming pool and imagine yourself floating in it with a drink, but it becomes considerably less agreeable when you remember that the ocean is one of the planet’s great climate regulators.
