Yeesh, that borders less on lateral thinking and more on straight out disrespect. Were they playing cannibals? Stone cold killers? Any natural inclination to that behavior? You didn't give any indication that mer-folk would even be edible or delicious?
That's the level of shenanigans like "You see before you a charming farm hamlet." "I set all the buildings on fire." Deliberately trying to ruin the game. Not many groups I'd walk away from, but unless I really trusted they genuinely wanted to play fish man eaters, I'd definitely consider it.
I mean, maybe if they were 13 year olds who've never been given an ounce of freedom in their lives, I'd be less worried at any sudden dramatic subversion.
@cy TBF, the player sabotage approach is the most likely of actions taken, and fits the personality of the specific individual who announced this call to action.
Were they bored? Had they had enough? Were they unhappy seeing me enjoying myself as DM of an RPG for the first time in 15 years? Were they an asshole?
In retrospect the answer to all is yes. It was a bit of a disappointment.
Sorry to hear that. It's so disenheartening when someone pulls the rug out under you like that.
On the other hand, it's a great opportunity to continue the campaign letting the players do whatever they want, except now all the mer-folk, and townsfolk, and city guards attack them on sight, including a few high level NPCs who don't appreciate fine cuisine. If they get subdued, they wake up in prison, and get to roleplay prisoners left to die. You could even introduce hunger points, and have them consume each other's corpses as they perished one by one!
But I don't think I'd actually have it in me to be that vindictive.
@pseudonym watch out for extreme lateral thinking! I tried running a campaign a few years ago with some friends who decided to EAT my carefully crafted NPC mer-folk. The game came to an abrupt halt. It was the sort of shenanigan that I might expect from middle-schoolers.
