🤔 I'm old enough to remember when we used to have Free Software institutions that took a moral/ethical stance on things that mattered.
They are gone. All of them.

I don't often listen to corporate broadcast radio, but today one of the stations in my market were using the phrase "guaranteed human" on most of their bumpers.
Maybe 2 out of 3 yards in my neighborhood have anti AI/data center signs in their yards.
Very few things unify people to this extent. Free software "leaders" are on the wrong side of history on this issue and need to get out of the house more to understand why.

@downey I believe we will need to develop a human web in a different layer so we can interact with each other and with human content. We will need to replace a lot of the services that are enshitified or contaminated with slop.

They didn’t all disappear overnight.
The moral version of Free Software lost the room when “open source” became the business-friendly label, big companies started using the same code without the ethics, and the FSF became too tied to one person. After the Stallman controversies a lot of people and sponsors walked away.
The software won.
The institutions that treated freedom as a moral line mostly didn’t.
@downey Oh but they're very much taking a stance. Just the one that somehow puts the maintainability and creation of said Free software behind a paywall.
