If a few of the DMs I've received after posting my thoughts on AI are any indication, I've made a few people rather angry at me. And I'm not sorry. There is nothing good about current AI. AI could have been created ethically, but instead, the rich folks behind it decided money was more important so they decided to steal to build their models. And the people who continue to use AI even when they know the ethical issues behind it don't care about the ethical issues behind it. In one of the DMs that I received, I was told that they use AI from Google ethically. That is just not possible. Someone explain to me how this is possible.

@chadmccullough I understood what is happening better when William Bernstein reminded me that a characteristic of stock-market bubbles is believers getting angry at anyone who does not agree that every farmhouse in the UK needs a railway station. Addicts too ("how dare you tell me not to smoke on this airplane").

Yeah I'm really kind of depressed about how large language models have poisoned the well for actually useful tools that have come out of AI research. I mean they're still all spin-offs like image recognition and classification, not the kind of thing that they are presenting these parody generators as being. But there are some cool things out there that have been basically steamrollered.

@chadmccullough the pattern i keep seeing from the various slopbot fans incl here in fedi alas, is they focus on their alleged downstream output benefits [oh but we can do this, & that, & t'other] & ignore my simple assertions of the upstream input problems, viz: theft, energy, water. then, when i assert the obvious output problem of untrustworthiness, they obfuscate or avoid that one too. consequently my view remains unaltered, viz:
Fuck Generative AI, coz:
- largest theft of private IP in human history
- generates authoritative bullshit via unsolvable hallucinations
- massive water + energy demands as climate crisis intensifies
