I don't know, it seems to me that open hostility to #accessibility should be grounds for kicking someone off an instance.
@RachelThornSub there are lots of people who don't understand what accessibility is, and use or bots such as altbot, or they write superficial content such as "images of a boat". Accessibility is not a favor, it's participation and I fear that fediverse cannot be a happy island because it depends on human beings. And if a human being has never been used to accessibility, on Facebook, X, friendica or mastodon, they'll never learn.
We all know the reason why Black and Brown users abandon the Fediverse. It's because of a legalistic, "freedom of speech," "give the poster the benefit of the doubt" approach to moderation that is very much from a white perspective. Rather than trusting a member of a marginalized group when they say they have been harassed, moderators too often doubt them. So far #Blind users are sticking with the Fediverse, but literally because all the other platforms have zero accessibility.
So many people want the Fediverse to "grow" (in numbers of users), but whenever there's a spike in new users, there's also a spike in images (mostly memes-that-don't-need-to-be-memes) lacking #AltText. If we just shrug, or worse yet we scold the users who ARE ENCOURAGING THESE PEOPLE TO MAKE THEIR POSTS ACCESSIBLE, we are going to see an exodus of Blind users similar to the exodus of Black and Brown users.
Is that the Fediverse you want? It's not the Fediverse I want.
The "Don't scold people for not adding AltText" stance reminds me of the U.S. Democratic Party members who don't want us to call racists "racists."
They prioritize the feelings of the bigots who think Blind users aren't worth their attention over the feelings of both Blind users and the allies who want this place to be as accessible as possible.
