I've got two bicycles with 1X drivetrains. One of them Just Works™. The other has a habit of throwing the chain off (four times on Wednesday's commute). Always comes off on the crank side, never inboard.

Q5. Where should I start looking to prevent dropping my chain? I recently found out that the tension of the derailleur clutch can be adjusted; is that a good starting point?

Alternatively: chain guides that will mount on a T47 bottom bracket? (Frame mount not an option.)

@ascentale @paul_edwin @bikenite A5: first make sure the chain is on the right way round. Some chains have both a top/bottom *and* a drive direction.

Setting up a 12x1 or similar rear mech isn't trivial and ideally you'd read the manual and watch a video of your exact one. But there's a lot of praxis involved, not just the theory but the hands-on experience of doing it.

If you can't make it work try asking your LBS mechanic to talk through what they're doing when they do it.
