I've been a full-time #linux user for about 18 months now. First #ubuntu, then #mint, now #fedora (yes, it is very likely mastodon's fault). Very happy with it all. And I have learnt plenty. Seeking #recommendations for (e)books or courses for learning how to terminal/bash better. If it's free (or low cost) that'd be cool, because money is pretty tight right now.

I'm not a complete beginner, but sed and parameter expansion and regex-looking things are intimidating.

@tlohde tbh, I'm a programmer who understands sed and regex (to some degree anyway 😅), and I've never had to deal with those while running a Linux machine.

I have a Mac mini M1 running the Asahi remix of Fedora GNOME, and for the most part I have everything working just fine with like 95% GUI usage not much fiddling in the terminal at all. Rather impressive, coming from a macOS background!

But if you'd excited about picking up those skills, totally go for it!

@jaredwhite @tlohde mac is built on Unix. A bsd variant instead of a linux variant i think

@cooperdozier @tlohde True, but even with the arrival of a Unix-based OS from Apple (Mac OS X/macOS) they made it so there's virtually never a reason to drop down to the terminal to configure the system. That's often been less true on other Unix-style systems, which is why I was saying it's cool the modern Linux desktop doesn't require much terminal know-how.
