@daniel and there he goes again -.- #Schwurbler #schwurbel
@benkuly independent implementations like Continuwuity, Tammy and FluffyChat are great. My criticism is only with regards to Element and their influence over the Matrix Foundation.
@daniel I thought Matrix was pretty cool.
Comparable to Google in your opinion?
@PhillipPlays No, of course not. Not that bad. But I’d be taking a closer look at the checks and balances within the Matrix Foundation (spoiler: they basically don’t exist) and ask myself why, after 10 years, there are almost no independent implementations of the Matrix protocol.
@daniel I remember Minds used to use the Matrix protocol for DMs, but they tried moving away from it because I guess the Matrix people are extremely political and refused to work with them.
@daniel replace matrix with nextcloud and your toot is still the same
@daniel Being the reason for that I'm curious about the future of #Android (and thus also #Grapheneos). How much of momentum will be left if #Google continues to cancel community support and lock out developers?
@daniel that's the important thing about having something like a Foundation in the background. Isn't it?
@dbread Foundation is a good start but you would have to make sure that the Foundation isn’t staffed and controlled almost entirely by employees and former employees of the biggest company in the space.
@daniel You could, unfortunately, say the same thing about Signal, and others.
One thing about OSS is that it needs (a lot) more funding and (a lot) more developers, IMHO.
Convenience matters. It's great for "all the Android smartphone makers" to be able to lean back and say "Google has got this", instead of stepping up and doing something about this ridiculous situation.
@daniel free software is the way, open-source is a big lie
