@globalmuseum I'm puzzled by the large difference in style between the deep, smooth, I want to say confident outlines of the giraffes and the very different look of the horned animal (gnu?) off to the left.
A shame that the article is paywalled. I'd be very curious about the explanation for that.
The giraffes, and a similar elephant in the wikimedia set of files, look almost modern because of that. Plus the way none of the cracks in the rock have affected the engravings much. Very odd for something 8000 years old.
@globalmuseum These engraved contour are perfect, worthy of today's best illustrator.
@globalmuseum What is the source of this photo, ie where does the original photo come from? The museum or university that is the source of the photo and the people who did the original research should get a shout-out too.
@perkinsy I agree Yvonne. I have tried to find the orignal source, to no avail
@globalmuseum @perkinsy Rudolf Baumann photographer, according to the wikimedia jpg file info. Photo taken 2004, uploaded 2009.
@globalmuseum The best that I could find was this Wikipedia article with a ference to a closed source journal article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wadi_Mathendous
