A #Neolithic rock crystal arrowhead found in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, dating ca. 3500 BC. The raw material was not available in the immediate area, but came from the Alps. Rock crystal has been mined in the Swiss Alps since the early Mesolithic; it is a particularly hard material, making it ideal for tools such as scrapers or perforators. It was widely used in the Alpine region for the manufacture of stone tools between the Mesolithic and the Bronze Age. 🧵 1/2
For today’s #StandingStoneSunday here’s a photo from last October’s visit to the amazing Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis in #Scotland. This is a view of the chambered tomb which was added later after the main stones were erected. Amazingly the site was buried under two meters (six feet) of peat for several thousand years before the stones and site were rediscovered in 1857. It is a fantastic place to visit. #standingstones #stonecircles #neolithic #OhCon

Archaeologists in Lüscherz, near Lake Bienne (Bielersee) in Switzerland 🇨🇭, uncovered a 4700 year-old ball of yarn dating back to around 2700 BC an extraordinary discovery from the #Neolithic era.
Its preservation is exceptional, as organic materials like yarn rarely survive for thousands of years. Scientists believe the yarn was protected in an oxygen-free environment such as lake sediment or peat, which prevented decay #globalmuseum #archaeology

New instance new intro!!
I'm a #librarian currently in #Ohio. I have 2 mini #dachshunds and 2 #cats. I enjoy all sorts of music.
I've been on Mastodon since October 2022, and this is my 6th server and is an alt account as Beige Party is down. Don’t know the last time I archived stuff, so If I didn’t send a friend request, my apologies.
I enjoy learning about #history and #archeology, particularly the #neolithic.
I'm also interested in #UrbanPlanning. I have an #ebike.
