the same tree in a different stage, i am grateful for any feedback on which species it is (Los Angeles, but presumably not native to here)
@inquiline I got maybe Prestoea acuminata (Mountain Cabbage Palm) from iNaturalist suggestions. Otherwise, really doesn't look like anything I've seen before!
thank you! i now wish i'd taken more pics of the tree bark and leaves, will try to do that if i'm in the area again so there's more to go on
