i'm just sort of shocked at this even tho i oughtn't be. and dismayed. i was staying out of email more earlier in the summer but then this week some stuff i had to check on and now... this. bleak
@inquiline well, thanks 😃 This is shaping up to be a year of further teaching horrors, frankly. The AI bot that listens to and transcribes classes is now freely available to all students chez nous without notification to colleagues or professors—with a warning that transcriptions are not to be shared, ofc. Local media taking the line, “oh noes, this amazing tech will throw student notetakers out of work!” Turned down a radio interview wrt it this week because I (still) like my job.
@inquiline my classes are 100% discussion (“this prof doesn’t really teach”—disgruntled lecture-liker) and sometimes involve student disclosure. This can’t play out safely and I fear doing harm just by the content and good faith space I offer students.
ugghhh that's horrible. is it a conversation you can have with the class at the beginning of term? space of trust and having a different compact w one another than the admin is handing down?
@inquiline that will be taken as an attack on accessibility. This surveillance is being framed as levelling the playing field. (Like, I assess thought as developed method, not recall of “content.”)
undoubtedly super tricky but is there a way to thread the needle on making a collective decision after talking thru tradeoffs and benefits of different options? if someone needs a record for disability reasons, there should be a way; but there can't also be nondisclosure or nonrequest by that person/s. & they could be able to get needs met w/o inevitable AI tool as only option? maybe rotating notetaker & course points for that role/day? or if recording, ways to hit pause in real time?
& you could have them disclose the request to you privately so as not to out themselves to whole class, ofc. needing a record (could be typed) for an individual's disability accommodation is not the same thing as everyone submitting their voice to the robot for training and god knows what, & i really do think talking thru all that with emph on needs, accommodation, & consent cd be pedagogically useful
@inquiline when a class at the end of last term (it was a diverse class in a fraught cultural studies field) discussed the whole thing, the ways the students spoke about the impending exposure would break your heart. I’m certainly going to do my best to identify the limits of what I am allowed to do and then do that. But the admin says the push for this thing came from the student union, so I’m not so hopeful.
