Nonono, not you in particular, I was wandering why aren't we (in general) tagging them with all our grievance so they see how badly they fucked up (again and again).
This is because a i've not seen them tagged in any other post but I've seen a lot of tagging for other companies (Mullvad comes to mind).
I'm very curious about that.

@rysiek Lot of places I've seen "kinda force" everyone to use Chrome and everyone will get used to it and daily Chrome at home, my mother thinks Chrome is "da Internet", making her switch to another browser is hard.
I managed to make my sis "slowly" switch to Firefox (aka. Gecko) and DuckDuckGo.
@Matteo561 I've been there when IE6 was "da Internet", and I was there pushing Firefox when it was still called Phoenix.
Mozilla would not get anywhere without activists like myself and uncountable others. And for the last decade or so they've been pissing that goodwill away.
They are being corrupted by money. That is the problem.

I still don't like them active on X, and some of the other steps they took, but being back on the fediverse is a good thing.

@Tassido there is a difference between being a leader in a space and hosting their own instance on one hand, and being a huge organization that is freeloading on some volunteer admin and moderator labour.

@rysiek last i heard, Mozilla gets most of its income from Google. I would not expect them to behave much different, no matter which words they use to give an impression of being "independent".
@minzastro that's been the case for ever. But Google has to fund Mozilla, it's one of the important ways they fend off any serious anti-trust action. If Mozilla had any courage, they could use that to their advantage. They choose not to.

It just seems like the appropriate reaction is despair over the death of the free and open web, not championing a closed Chrome clone from some for profit company

The question everyone forgot to ask:
Leading where?
They keep being so worried about Firefox losing market share that they keep doing everything to lose more market share by losing support of their most dedicated, activist userbase.
Recent ones:
- pushing AI down Firefox users' throats (why I switched to LibreWolf myself)
- killing their fedi instance
- going back to Xitter
Older ones include embracing DRM/EME, following Chrome instead of leading with privacy-first functionalities, and so many more.
@rysiek Mozilla-the-org has long since fallen prey to valley capture, and thus can't escape their mindset and thinking.
It's still the best for my needs, but the sun is clearly setting while others are slowly-but-surely catching up.

Uh, under Mitchell Baker they added some excellent privacy features.
When the Brendan-Eich-initiated froth over Baker's pay resulted in a leadership turnover, what we got was announcements of fealty to adtech and an attempt to undo the impact of those privacy features (like FPI) via baked-in ad tracking.
I tried using LIbreWolf, but the web is such a mess, that many of the sites I visit break horribly unless I manually disable LW's protections. It's more of an indictment to the open web than of LW, of course, but at least to the average user I'm sadly forced to recommend Waterfox instead.

@rysiek The biggest transgression, IMO, was how they recently declared total fealty to adtech. Like, "Firefox is an advertising platform" type of logic. The GenAI stuff (actually, just a prompt sidebar that the user could open) doesn't seem nearly as bad.
