@Em0nM4stodon Happy user of the Xteink X4, it matches all the points except "backlit". It turns on quickly, reads epubs, all on sdcard, tiny and fits in the palm (some may not like this, I love the size for bite sized reading).
@Em0nM4stodon All items except affordable in the Boox Palma. All items but backlight with the Xteink X4 running the Open Source Crosspoint firmware.
I think for that particular list of features, the best bet would be an older e-reader. There's no particular need to use a newer one - they might render after a page turn 100 milliseconds quicker or something, but that doesn't matter when you then spend a minute reading the page before doing it again.
(cc:) @ifixcoinops has Opinions about what the right kind of Old E-Reader is and has posted about getting them cheaply and sometimes just replacing the battery in them. I don't know if he'd care to make a recommendation for you.
@cazabon @Em0nM4stodon I take it we're talking more LCD than e-ink if you want it backlit and white-on-black, in which case any old android tablet and moon+ reader
Doh - I misread that and assumed "with internal lighting".
Em - does it actually need to be back-lit? Or do you just mean it needs to have built-in illumination so you can read without a separate lamp? Lots of e-readers have lighting built in with LEDs around the screen (it's magic 😊 ) so it's still front-lit (i.e. reflective, not transmissive).
@cazabon @ifixcoinops My preference would be backlit, yes. Maybe I could compromise on this for a device that is really cheap and has integrated soft lighting. I read at night before sleeping, so minimal illumination is required for what I need.

Thanks @tuvix. The PineNote looks great, but note the early adopter warning;
"The first batch of the PineNote will be great to write software for, but not great to write notes on. Wait for a later batch with better preinstalled software if you just want to use the device as an e-reader, e-note, or your everyday computing device."
@Em0nM4stodon What about a Pine64 device? I think their eReader might be sold out, but they have cheap tablets.
@Em0nM4stodon I use a Kobo. Except for the size, it has those features, even dark mode can be turned on with NickelMenu. A used one could keep the price down.

thanks for the reminder that i need to download an e reader app on my new Fairphone.😉 in Murena's app store are a number of e readers w/ long lists of features including yours, plus private, open source & free 😁
@Em0nM4stodon Xteink X4 fits almost all of those but the light. Most affordable of anything I think and smallest other than the Xteink X3.
I love my X4. Battery lasts forever. Ultra ultra portable. But for reading at home I got with a 6 inch Boox device.

No eink ereader is backlit. They use front lighting.
@Em0nM4stodon @Hiro the XTEInk X4 has all that but backlight, it has a 4" screen and is like $45 on aliexpress, I love mine, I use it during commute all the time.
However you must not be afraid to tinker a bit as the official firmware is not the greatest, yet there are really good ones online like CrossPoint ( https://github.com/crosspoint-reader/crosspoint-reader -- upgrading is pretty much plug&play)
