A few weeks ago, I was in Frankfurt about to head to Zambia when news started filtering out that RightsCon had been cancelled over pressure from China.
It was shocking to see. I still ended up traveling to Zambia for a separate event, but it showed me we can’t take our eye off China even if the US is the more immediate threat.
@parismarx I saw this, and at first understood the outrage at the Zambian government, then realizing that it was better to point the blame finger at Chinese colonialism. Which reminded me about a documentary about China in Zambia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/When_China_Met_Africa
@parismarx Yeah, unfortunately that multipolar world really just means multiple threats to democracy.
I feel like this is a common consequence of states that have significant international leverage and are driven by undemocratic hierarchies - which I'd argue is true for the US too, since the economy is almost entirely undemocratic, even if the territorial governments nominally are.
