YOU GUYS!! We live on a planet where the perfect combination of chemistry, atmospheric temperature and pressure, and geometry means that this ridiculously beautiful thing just HAPPENS sometimes!!!
Earth is so damn neat! We have the best planet!

@sundogplanets
...and all that beauty would be lost, if on the same planet certain monkeys hadn't evolved colour vision to find the ripest fruits. Wonderful planet with awesome inhabitants. …🐒🌈
@sundogplanets you should check out my friend Lucy's book: https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/461507/up-by-rogers-dr-lucy/9781529930276
😀
We should take better care of it…
@sundogplanets
Nine out of ten Kepler-22-ians disagree.
@sundogplanets
HELL YEAH EARTH #1
SUCK IT, MARS
@sundogplanets we all need to say this much more often. 👏
This is a frame from dashcam video recorded four years ago.
It's kinda sad that the pot of gold is a box of Chicken McNuggets.
there was a trend to proudly post your cool sky photos with the name of the store parking lot you were standing in
@sundogplanets mumble mumble ...any planet with a sufficiently transparent atmosphere with some vapour or particulate in it, will most likely have these... mumble mumble. But no, all that aside: great shot and agreed - this planet is surprising and pretty! 😊
@misjavanlaatum You need liquid or crystals to make rainbows of any kind. This is fun: https://www.atoptics.org.uk/halo/oworld.htm
@sundogplanets cool link! And it's really fun to imagine methane rainbows on Titan.
@sundogplanets I say "Earth first!".
@sundogplanets As I recall, before we had digital cameras, I took a picture of a double rainbow (there's a hint of one in Sam's picture) while visiting Canada - in my case, in the Bugaboos, located in British Columbia.
@sundogplanets Nice secondary, and a subtle hint of Alexander's dark band – I've never understood why the dark band doesn't always contrast much with the outside of the secondary.
But on to bigger things – are bows really unique to Earth? Not even anywhere else in the solar system? I've never thought about this before but realise that I've merely assumed that ice-crystal optical effects would be quite abundant even if water-drop effects aren't.
@libroraptor @sundogplanets I'd assume many places have at least something similar to a rainbow, different circumstances for light refraction and possibly different wavelengths even but it'll be out there.
@nini @libroraptor Also, other planets (in our solar system) have either fog-like tiny droplets or just ices. No raindrops! This might be of interest: https://www.atoptics.org.uk/halo/oworld.htm
@sundogplanets I saw a bright rainbow too in a residential suburb of Kampala. The first bright one I was seeing in a loooong time.
DOUBLE RAINBOW ALL THE WAY!
哇这也太激动人心了!每次看到这种自然奇观都忍不住感叹地球真的太神奇了,能和你一起生活在这个星球上真是件幸福的事 (´▽`)
@sundogplanets I love staring at the sky, even in the city. Sometimes, we get these extra clear nights and I feel like celebrating that I can see a few more stars than usual.
What a planet. 💙
@sundogplanets superb! rainbows are always special to me, each one is different
my favorite "it just happens" thing about earth is that we get solar eclipses. I wish I knew what the statistical likelihood of a planet's moon being the exact right size and distance to do a perfect solar eclipse. Aliens would visit here as a tourist attraction just to see one.
@Artemis201 YES I totally agree!
the attempt at rational explanation is that 1) since "we" happened, this is a part of the universe where some pretty complex shit happens. 2) Part of being "we" is pattern matching a torrent of external stimuli. Developed as a utilitarian evolutionary adaptation but thankfully it cant be limited to that. 3) Applying 2 to 1 acts like a sieve and unearths some "remarkable" phenomena and coincidences which brings us to this thread
Anyway, I tried 🤣 🌈 🌞 🌑
Nice spaceship. Self maintains if we let it.
Full disclosure:
I took this photo from a Costco parking lot. Which is a little depressing, but *also*...
Our planet is so amazing that even in the most nature-destroyed suburban hellscapes, you can still get ridiculously beautiful things like this. Earth is the best!
@sundogplanets at the end of the rainbow is a mega corp big box retail 🤣
@sundogplanets that sentence from "Idiocracy" was in my mind immediately.
@sundogplanets Canadians do love our Costco.
@mayintoronto I hate all grocery stores deeply, and I can only handle being in Costco for about 20 minutes before I lose it. But I do like that Costco treats their employees well, they don't screw over customers as badly as most grocery stores, and I can buy giant bags of things so I don't have to go there again for months if I play my cards right. You definitely asked my full opinion on Costco, right?
@sundogplanets Yes! Statistically, Canadian Costcos do soooo much better globally than every other country. I saw some recent (past... 5 years?), 2 of the busiest Costcos in the world were in the GTA.
I do love that they treat their staff better than all the other shit chains.
@sundogplanets view from the Walmart parking lot a while ago
@sundogplanets Def better than Venus and Mars ... it's got a magnetic field and everything!
@sundogplanets I’m not sure why but grocery store parking lots seem to get better than average sunsets too
Nice rainbow capture!
