Haha, someone dropped that piece on YC and it rocketed to #3 and turned into ragebait (e.g. the comment on the blog gives a flavor of the YC reactions, which I'm not linking to) and within 15 minutes was flagged and gone.

@timbray yeah vendors keep asking if we’re attending events, not even their events. And no. No thank you.
We even have a massive unused budget accumulated now.

@timbray we (globally) should have learned from COVID to design events that are virtual or hybrid by default. Is it a 1 to 1 replacement for in person events - nope - but had we continues to explore hybrid and all virtual events then events could indeed include folks who can't or won't travel to a given country in that event (as speakers, participants ,sponsors and attendees)
Instead most events that had pivoted to virtual or hybrid seem to be going back to in person
