Does anyone make a consumer uninterruptible power supply that doesn't completely deplete its expensive ($55 OEM, ~$25 3rd party, in my specific case) lead-acid battery in 18 months regardless of whether it ever actually uses it? Because I'm getting real tired of this cyberpower one.

Somehow everything else that uses a lead-acid battery can keep it alive for years with much heavier use so I don't understand how it's possible for the UPS to kill it after maybe 3-5 charge cycles in 18 months

Please boost this so that I can get some product recommendations

@someonetellmetosleep this sounds like the float voltage is wrong for the specific battery construction, but I’ll bet you can’t adjust that without a soldering iron and poking around inside the case. FWIW you need to pick your poison - either a cheap UPS that takes generic batteries (eg CyberPower), or an expensive UPS that takes proprietary batteries (eg APC or Eaton)

In any case, even with correct charge voltage and current, and correct float voltage, lead-acid batteries are consumables and usually only last 3-5 years.

@jpm in this case it seems to be a cheap UPS that takes proprietary batteries, or at least, CyberPower has obfuscated it very well if they aren't. there are generics available and they are half the cost, but it seems they need to be exactly model-matched

lasting 3-5 years would at least be expected, the problem is, I've only even had this thing for under 5 years, and for close to one year of that it's not even been in use, and this is the second battery that needs replacement. and since I don't test it regularly (because I never remember, not as any strategy on my part) I don't actually know how long it's been dead for but probably some time. so, maybe they're lasting two years, though not with very usable capacity in the latter parts of their lifespans. in any case I don't have a soldering iron or know how to use one

@jpm @someonetellmetosleep go the Eaton? Some of theirs take generics. Mine's been easily good for years
