Sigh, had some very strong students totally phone in their final project (graded accordingly). They did way worse than the rest of the class, totally just threw stuff together and turned stuff in with almost no thought. 馃槩 #teaching

i'm about 1/3rd of the way into mine and braced for a nasty surprise but so far it's going ok
@inquiline I am wondering if I should have been harder on grading the good students earlier in the semester, to keep them on notice. They breezed through the assignments (smart kids) but definitely were speed running them....
i'm the wrong person to ask as all i do is require less and less work and lower my standards and then lower them again. everyone i know is at a loss these days, and overall the situation defies comprehension
On the other hand, had some students who were struggling to keep up who really worked hard on the project, and it really showed. Thought they'd be in trouble with the class but will have a really decent grade as a result of their extra work on the final project. 馃し
Same for our class. Some of the best final projects were from students who worked so hard to stay on track all semester, many of the students who were doing fine heading into the final project just disappointed.
@MCDuncanLab Yeah, well, I will try something different if I teach this class next time. The prior class everyone put in an A effort for the final (and one of the students actually got a job out of the project and the things learned in the class!)
@ai6yr @MCDuncanLab
I always find this so hard! I've tried to accept that there are a significant number of students who just want to pass the class, and so once they cross the passing threshold, they just stop. Still hurts to see the clearly very good students just totally stop trying at the end though.
