This morning on the cargo bike my 4yo brought up the existence of "bicycles that are like a bicycle but they have only one wheel and they don't have these [makes a handlebar motion] and you have to hold your arms out to the side to balance".
So we had a nice chat about unicycles and penny farthings and the invention of the 'safety bicycle'.
"Well I want to call this bicycle a safety bicycle. I like that. I'm going to do that."
@scroeser As a unicycle commuter and international penny farthing racer, this cheers me up no end. 🤪
@scroeser More seriously though you can tell your 4yo that you don't always have to hold out your arms to balance. It depends on your experience and/or the terrain. Sometimes on cold days, I put my hands in my pockets. 😉
@ruari I have reported this to my kid and he was very interested! Then we had a fun chat about how instead of using the cargo bike he could balance on my shoulders and we could bike around on a unicycle.
@scroeser I think the reason people assume this is seeing people do tricky stuff like cycling along a tightrope where of course it helps massively. Though to be honest walking over a tightrope I'd expect most people to do the same thing.
