I pushed changes to #tagspub today to use any-ascii on non-ASCII tags, to make them suitable for following from #mastodon and other ASCII-only services. I have mixed feelings about the results; they're OK but not great. I think I'm going to start sharing from Unicode account names, too, and just let them bounce for servers that don't accept Unicode account names.
I was very glad to see that #fedibird is connecting to tags.pub now \o/ but sad to see that tags with Japanese characters in them were just getting trimmed to nothing. Now, at least, they should get romanized, although pure kanji is romanized into Mandarin! Still some tuning to do.
