I'm glad that we're finally realizing that we need open source alternatives for the desktop and our apps, but can we also focus on mobile devices now?

It's ridiculous that we basically have two mobile 'options', both with restrictive, proprietary app stores (see also https://keepandroidopen.org/).
If Europe values digital sovereignty, then it needs to invest more in open hardware, open source OS's, and alternative app stores. 🇪🇺

Does that mean that I have to switch to e/os before that date and after that date Android and Fairphone are "locked" together?
@Gina
I miss
@shiftphones
@iode

Or perhaps OwnPhone from @YourDataNetwork ? I do now know them yet, but their products look interesting. https://fosstodon.org/@YourDataNetwork@mastodon.social/115978684794197434
@Gina what do you mean by locked down platform please?
@climatemigrant as in, ios and android. Proprietary platforms and app stores managed by Apple and Google.
@Gina I pressed on the link and saw what you meant. Thank you. I am new on Mastodon so not familiar with it yet. I am using a Fairphone, I have stopped using Meta's platforms but I don't know how to get rid of my gmail account which is linked to so many things and first and foremost to the smartphone and google maps. I initially use hotmail though, but still, a gmail account is needed sadly. Are you not using Google and gmail?
@Gina Sure seems like we managed to reproduce a similar duopoly as we had on the desktop 🍎 🪟 → 🍎 🤖
@Gina @EC_DIGIT it's a pity that @EUCommission is on the wrong side of this fight, trying to get Android locked down as part of its dirty #ChatContol #DigitalOmnibus
There was a public consultation about open source recently - that means there may be an update in the EU open source strategy soon? Probably they are analysing results now…

PS also follow @HennaVirkkunen for this kind of thing
@hpod16 @EC_DIGIT @EUCommission
True, we were one of many many orgs and people that provided input. It should be mentioned that we're very impressed with how proactive the European Commission has been so far when it comes to their open source strategy. But mobile seems a forgotten area (for us at a national level as well). Big fan of @HennaVirkkunen btw!

@Gina There are thankfully mobile options already. With GrapheneOS - you can even run a "closed off" google services api - to get chromecast working.
If you can do without chromecast - e/OS (with locked bootloader)- means netflix, banking apps etc. works fine.
Of all the apps I have tried only McDonalds app won't work on any of them :)
Jolla afaik runs the same - even though its not even Android.
@Gina Government should simply stop creating iOS and Android apps and only create PWAs. Additionally, make a list of devices/OS combinations that do not undermine Dutch sovereignty. And, like @bert_hubert deploy, deploy, deploy. And cancel the slm-mga aka slm-maga
@Gina Yes! Still looking forward to the day when I can install a Linux or BSD distro on *any* phone without any hassle

@Gina That's what the @modal collective has been calling for (and is acting on) too: https://modal.cx/blog/sovereign-mobile-stack/
@Gina maybe actually *do* something on that desktop also. As in deploy. Use. Migrate to. Commit to. Not seeing anything like that here. Tiny trials.
@bert_hubert fully agree. Btw are you going to the ibestuur conference? It might be nice to see what's been happening in the realm of MijnBureau and DAWO.
@Gina no - I assume all is great with MijnBureau and DAWO. The problem is that no one wants to deploy anything, no matter how great the solutions are.
@bert_hubert @Gina "no one get fired for using [insert big tech]"
@Gina there is only 1 EU desktop OS and it's on the verse to be selled SUSE.
so in desktop we don't have much either.
