I just started playing No Man’s Sky (played for like 30 minutes when it first came out, got bored, and I’m just now picking it back up 10 years later), and one of the secondary missions is a requisite part of the primary mission, so why even call attention to it as a separate secondary (i.e., side) mission?

@ramsey have you tried the Witcher? I think witcher3 wildhunt would be of your liking.
Mass effect would also be nice. The Mafia remake (of the First one, was pretty good)
@psycodepath I’ve tried playing Witcher 3 several times. I’m not sure why it’s never really captured my attention.
@ramsey Star Trek Voyager across the unknown IS also pretty story rich afaik. Have Not played it yet but it is on my list. (Also on Steam Sale right now)
@ramsey I got bored of it relatively fast too. Even though I haven't completed the main quest, it felt like I'm doing side quests of a game I've already finished. You know, the random ones that try to make you play a game longer.
So, I built a base. What now? Do I just keep building? Is there a story here somewhere?
I just keep trying to fill that void left in my soul that only games like Fallout 4, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Cyberpunk 2077 can fill.
This game is fun, but it doesn’t fill that void.
@ramsey I don't play many games, but I love the Fallout series. I started Skyrim a few weeks ago and, despite not being a big fantasy person, am enjoying it.
Does it help that I joined the Stormcloaks and regularly go around slaying both dragons and Imperials? Maybe 😉
@ramsey I recommend "Kingdom Come: Deliverance". Trying to survive in medieval warzone simulator will make wild west/post apo/future dystopia feel like a luxury, but progress is really satisfying
@shudder Thanks! If I ever get around to building a Linux gaming rig, I’ll check it out. For now, I’m only on macOS, so my games are limited.
@ramsey there's a story but it's pretty drawn out with a lot of grinding. The ending of it is interesting, though. Mostly nms is a crafting game. The addictive loop is in unlocking that next thing and the next and the next. But it hooked me for 60 hours.
@sixohsix That can hook me, too, but then, after a while, and too many nights playing until 3am, I start wondering why I’m still playing. 😅
@ramsey have you played Death Stranding or Horizon? Both are quite excellent story based series with large open worlds to explore.

@ramsey oh? What platform are you playing on? I've played them both on the PlayStation, though I was almost certain my friend has played the first Death Stranding on Linux.
@horuskol I’m on macOS. I’m interested in building a Linux box to play Steam games there using Proton, their Wine fork, but I want to wait for RAM and GPU prices to come back down.

I’ve had the same experiences with NMS every time I’ve tried to come back to it over the years. They’ve done an incredible job updating it and keeping it going… but I just don’t get the point of playing it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@britt I have a suspicion it satisfies that desire folks often have in games when they go, “I don’t want to play the story here. I just want to explore the world and build stuff.”
@britt I used to be that way, especially with sim games. I love just building. But I’ve realized that I tend to get bored if that’s all there is, so now, I try to find games with stories and objectives that advance the stories. The cool thing about Fallout 4 was that it had a lot of both. I would spend hours just building my settlements, but when that got boring or I ran out of resources, I would return to exploring and doing story quests.
@ramsey I absolutely relate! I love how open NMS is, but for me, the entirety of the universe is a bit much. Haha.
Have you ever played Civ 6? Or any of those games for that matter? I find the gameplay loop feels similar, but it’s not as permanent as a traditional RPG. The replayability is so wonderful.
Would you be open to trying other indies that might have similar gameplay loops? I have a few in my mind but I’m unsure if it would be helpful to recommend anything.

@ramsey @britt story is not bad, i mean main story lines, a bit too slow, too long, but interesting. Building and fighting not really good.
But it has some kind of meditation, exploring space for perfect planet. Or searching for salvage. Now houling waste. Learning words. Accessing galaxies.
Slow virtual life to escape.
And fishing, it goes really nice with coffee 👍
@ramsey I started the game a few months ago.
The game is huge, but yes, knowing what to do next is not its strength.
Exosuit to upgrade, multitools, ships, cargos, corvettes, bases, missions… There are plenty of things to focus.
« Is there a story » Yes, but understanding the lore takes time : it is exploded in so many shards everywhere… tbh, imho, the lore is not the strength of NMS…
