The facility currently holds more than 1,400 people including infants and toddlers, the Texas Tribune reports. Opened in December 2014 under the Obama Administration, the detention center is an hour outside San Antonio. It's the subject of allegations of civil rights abuses against detained migrants, according to court documents.
In early February, the facility came under fire after doctors sounded the alarm on a measles outbreak among those detained within the facility. Dr. Lee C. Rogers, chief of podiatric medicine and surgery at UT Health San Antonio, said the outbreak was a 'public health emergency' and called for 'an immediate, unified command-and-control of the measles outbreak.'"
