My last laptop suddenly gave out, so I've extracted the harddrive & I am trying to move its files over to my new laptop. I've got got a SATA USB adapter to help with this.

My struggle: I've put password protection on the old laptop (now an external drive) and its not obvious how to authenticate into it.

No, I can't swap the harddrive since the new laptop's entirely solid-state. Yes, I know the password.

I'm on elementary OS.

@kevinrns I've got enough followers that this wasn't an issue.

@alcinnz Can you boot over USB to the old drive on the new laptop?

@alcinnz

Elementary OS uses LUKS encryption.
So probably on the new laptop something like:

# cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda1 newdisk (or whatever the encrypted disk is, give your password).
# mount /dev/mapper/newdisk /mnt

@bradr @esoteric_programmer CyptSetup seems to have run successfully, but mount says "mount: /mnt: unknown filesystem type 'LVM2_member'.

Is there something I need to install to read this disk?

@esoteric_programmer @bradr I'm finally upgrading my version of elementary.

I just found that StackOverflow recommends the vgrename command, and indeed vgdisplay complains about duplicate names. Now to figure which is which...

@alcinnz @esoteric_programmer @bradr

Note that after renaming the #LVM volume group you might have trouble booting from or logging in using that disk - the path to the root volume will be different.
(I have a laptop with 2 SSDs, and wanted to install side-by-side versions of the same OS #debian, and mount my old home to copy across...

@alcinnz @esoteric_programmer

Thanks, good to know. I was worried! 😄
(I was going to say something about vgscan, but I didn't think it was likely EOS lvm'd disks... Leben und lernen.)

@alcinnz I'm not sure if you /can/ unlock a password-protected drive through a SATA/USB adapter? USB mass storage is SCSI, so you can't send the necessary ATA Security commands I don't think.

@alilly Ugh, I guess I still have my previous old laptop... Case is in sad shape, but it might do the job...
