Today in Labor History February 14, 1947: The British government initiated Operation Embarrass, a campaign designed to slow down illegal immigration of Jewish Holocaust survivors to Palestine, which was, at the time, a British colony. Operation Embarrass bombed five ships and sabotaged others, making it look like the attacks were carried out by a fictional Palestinian terrorist organization called The Defenders of Arab Palestine. The details of this secret operation only came to light with the 2010 publication of Professor Keith Jeffery’s book, “SIS, MI6: The History of the Secret Intelligence Service 1909-1949.”
