regarding the "AI hit piece" post going around: it's put me past a tipping point. I don't think the tech is inherently evil and I don't buy half of what anti-genAI zealots say, but I've now turned the corner to thinking it's time to fight big-tech "AI" by any means necessary to drag out their schemes until the torrent of venture capital implodes. the current trajectory needs to be arrested, and megacorps pushing this shit need to be put back on their asses. #genAI #generativeAI #AIslop #fuckAI

resisting genAI just long enough and just strong enough that the bubble pops is literally the only lever we have to pull versus deeply immoral scumbags with enough wealth to rival major nations, before they fuck up all our lives with breathtaking speed.
the tech won't be stopped, but the current trajectory needs to collide head-on with a major roadblock. choking off the venture capital is the only way, and the good news is that'll happen on its own if we drag out their plans long enough.
the only way I can see offhand (having just shifted my view on this) to accomplish this is to relentlessly fight genAI adoption in both professional & personal contexts - which doesn't have to be scorched-earth to be successful, if you think raising endless "concerns" will slow it down, by all means do that - and expressing clear social disapproval of its use in any non-decentralized context.*
make it costly, difficult, and unpleasant to adopt centralized genAI. drag it out as long as you can.
I'm sure plenty of people will disagree with my asterisk, and they think genAI should be completely purged, and will disapprove of anyone who uses it in any capacity at all. I don't agree, but I will say I respect their opinions more now than I did 3 hours ago, and I respected them a fair bit to start with. and whether or not they go too far, they need to win these debates long enough to knock bloodless torment-nexus shepherds like Sam Altman and Elon Musk decisively off their current path.

the good news is: Sam Altman wouldn't be locking in the majority of global silicon wafer starts if he thought he had any chance of building his business sustainably.
these fuckers have a *big* Achilles heel and we absolutely can bring them to a state of disarray long enough for some sanity to be injected. thank you for your attention to this matter!!
@tsadilas thanks for the link. I have some skepticism with some of the claims made in that essay, but the systems are definitely useful for a range of tasks or people wouldn't be investing like they are. it's not 100% hype or 100% real but somewhere between.

@deutrino The only idea I have is to either refuse to use it, or run up their bills so goddamn much that they regret ever deploying these tools for "free".
@faoluin the latter is where a friend of mine is thinking, and I tend to agree.
or a combo: refuse to use centralized genAI professionally (gum up adoption with endless concerns, etc), express social disapproval of centralized genAI personally, and also run up the bills of centralized genAI providers, possibly with automated tools.
@deutrino Based on the fact that OpenAI is not remotely profitable, and in fact has no way to become profitable short of charging users directly, far more money than they do, each and every "free" user they serve costs them more money and gives them nothing in exchange.
