Can you describe specifically what do did, in granular steps, and what happened after each step? That way we might be able to figure out what's going wrong, and how to fix or work around it.
@strypey When I click on the link, a new tab opens in which I'm not logged in. This is probably perfectly ordinary, and something that I should understand...but I don't.

Ah, it's treating it as a standard webpage link, instead of a fediverse link.

Absolutely not on you. This is a #UX fail in the app you're using. Some of the apps I use with my Mastodon account, including @moshidon, do a pretty good job of telling the difference, and opening fediverse posts in-app.
Which app are you using there?

Right, but what web app were you using inside the browser? The standard one provided by kolectiva.social looks like vanilla Mastodon. But there are other web apps that can be used with Mastodon servers (and others), including Phanpy, Elk, and the various Pinafore forks (Enafore, etc).
