3.3.0 appimage has decided to segfault on start. didn't yesterday, does today.
3.4.0 appimage crashes immediately on vaapi on this laptop (yes, bug reported) and CPU is as i type this rendering at a stunning 1.8fps (3.3.0 rendered at 8fps)

@hipsterelectron @davidgerard Seconded. Even though it's basically just an ffmpeg wrapper (don't yell at me I know it's a hair more than this, but it's still calling out to other software a *lot*). In fact, that's kind of what's brilliant about it to me. Incredible code economy. The only small complaint I might have is that the UI could be slightly less cluttered. Still figured it out in about 20 minutes and I've used it to make professional presentations for work plenty since then. It's truly nice for everything from quick memes to titlecard animations and professional looking watermarking and logo placement. There are a silly number of video effect plugins for a free program. Trust me David you will not regret learning to use it, it's like 20 minutes of dicking around and you're free
@somebody @davidgerard the only thing i would yell at you for is not identifying the incredibly toxic stance the ffmpeg maintainers have towards documentation. a build system also calls out to external code a lot and in fact that's what makes it effective
@hipsterelectron @davidgerard I've never worked on ffmpeg, so I guess I've not encountered that side of the project. As an end user though, I'm quite happy with the cli docs. That is however very little of the documentation you really need on the development and maintenance side of things, and I'm sure that there are power users who would complain (after all, I just use the kdenlive front end for a reason except for like a few scripts I made such as my two pass webm script for sending videos without eating up bandwidth).
If what you're saying is true, I'd probably get sick of it pretty quick. I would rather delay a commit by weeks if that's how long it takes to document every few lines. I really do insist on every few lines. If you can't articulate what the code's doing in your native tongue, you don't understand it. If you don't understand it, you shouldn't ship it.
@somebody @davidgerard only time i've ever locked my account on twitter from abuse was after they namesearched and quoted me when i was trying to show off a wasm build (i had not yet realized wasm was evil) and found their library API docs are "read the header files you fucking idiot. PRs welcome btw"

@hipsterelectron @davidgerard OH just regarding video processing and the fact that sending large files willy nilly is a pox on the infrastructure, one of the most annoying things about the "nicer" social or chat platforms like this one is that they process your video after you upload it. I'll get it down to like 2MB by aggressively transcoding it to webm with my two pass maximal interframe settings script. Upload it here or wherever. Download it again, it's 50MB. Mf just serve the file I uploaded
@somebody @davidgerard i ran into this while thinking about compression recently. it can be difficult to justify performing trial compression with various techniques unless that is precisely the entire purpose of your system. mastodon and eugen are absolutely not the kind of people who are interested in optimality and re-encoding also allows an opportunity for a server to e.g. perform censorship. people go gaga over encrypted DMs but that's not a system i would entrust to mastodon by any means because you can in fact perform a great deal of surveillance and censorship without breaking cryptography and this is something that motivates much of my recent research
@hipsterelectron @davidgerard as far as that give I used to have TS before I made a guy mad (that is a long story I ain't share here), I know what we were taught that I still swear by as far as "old ways" go regarding security is that there's no better place to hide than a swarming mass of people and bustling business. well, this makes me curious about your research. I am just saying, don't I know it. What research do you refer to here? Anyway, people really think that just because they've redacted their messages that a rational agent can't tell what they're probably about.
But this is ludicrous. Like we all know far more about what these billionaire pedo guys were doing, as an example, than has been revealed through these releases in which whole pages are blacked out. We know because we can look at connections, networks, timing. We can look at purchasing and travel behaviors. We can use extraneous data to deduce everything we need. I wish I could shake people on this.
@hipsterelectron @davidgerard I use encryption for almost everything, even chatting with my ex-wife about a valentines package for my son or planning the local inclusive interfaith theology meetup at a coffee shop. If everything's encrypted, that actually takes away from the context clue of encryption itself. "I just care about my privacy, it's my right as a citizen, etc etc". But it goes so much deeper than this. Anytime you can take a variable offline, something you think "I only need to X when Y" and you start saying "I always X", you've taken an indicator of Y offline! One can move without being seen in plain sight.
Anyway, could you elaborate on the research you're doing here? I was more just blabbing about training like as if it was a nervous tic.
@somebody public key cryptography is a tool of surveillance unless it can be incorporated into a system that considers leakage of the sender and recipient to be a form of cryptanalysis. diffie-hellman can still be used to achieve this. beyond ratcheting keys the next problem is traffic analysis. surprisingly i have also found this to be completely unsolved and particularly i believe the solution to this also addresses ddos effectively overcoming cryptographic guarantees by enabling the secure system to be brought down at any time
@somebody these actually compose pretty naturally together and work over arbitrary untrusted channels. the network routing scheme also achieves what people claim the internet itself performs in routing around censorship—but not automatically. very little can be done automatically. it unfortunately requires a rethink of the network apparatus which is only unfortunate because it takes a lot more work. but it's really not terribly complex just nobody uses the right problem statement and i hate everyone for that

but in reality blender is pretty ok for video.
davinci resolve (free version) works on linux and is a really good editor... but obviously proprietary.
