What I love about #Conversations_im as a #UnifiedPush distributor—aside from #XMPP being a reliable, secure, and efficient protocol—is that it comes with a healthy dose of decentralization.

Sure, you can technically self-host a Sunup instance, but will you? XMPP already offers thousands of providers out of the box.

@daniel But that's only half the truth, right? It still needs a custom UnifiedPush backend on top, and that pretty much makes conversations.im a centralised dependency in practice again (or at least means you *do* have to self-host another service in addition to the XMPP server).

@nik @daniel No, both Prosody and Ejabberd have extensions to easily include this functionality. The conversations.im server is only the pre-configured default.

@kris @daniel Yes, they might have the option – but that doesn't mean all these thousands of XMPP servers have it enabled. For reference, of the three XMPP servers I have accounts on, zero have it.

@nik @daniel ask them to enable it. It is a relatively new and niche option and the server admins are probably just not aware. It takes minimal resources, so there is no reason not to enable it.

@daniel @nik Yeah, it's mostly "set it and forget it". I have it enabled on Queer Spark and has worked reliably in my experience

@kris @nik @maskedwitch Indeed. User's should just ask their admins because chances are they simply aren't aware of UnifiedPush yet. UP after all is still a relatively niche thing.

In an ideal world I would not be running up.conversations.im forever.

There will be some auto discovery in Conversations soon where after selecting what account you want to use for UP, you won't have to enter the up address anymore if your server has one.

@daniel I know some users who do self-host it 🤓 (there is even an AUR for that)

This is also an advantage of NextPush: it turns your own NextCloud server as a push server
